Family reunions and the joy they bring us seem to have become a feature of the family and various editions of the Newsletter. Since the last Newsletter two special dates have taken place. Liz and Ron James were the perfect hosts on Sunday 10th December 2006. It was wonderful to see such a large number of the family in attendance. Following is a report from Len Apple and a selection of photographs taken by Liz and Ron. (Please click on the Attachments. For some reason, this time, the computer is refusing to do the usual cut and past job.) Mid January a small group of us were able to catch up with Marian and Rabbi Raymond Apple. Naturally talk turned to family history, memories of Aida and Harry Apple, Harry visiting Sadie Cowen, Mrs. Bloom and so on. As always, Liz’s family research and her grasp of the details astounded us. Each time we all get together at such a family gathering we all seem to come up with wonderful memories. While they are a joy within themselves, these memories help to keep deceased family members “alive” . As my history teacher explained it, the birth, marriage and death dates are the skeletons but it is the stories of what a person was like that puts the flesh on them. Perhaps you have a story you would like to share with us? Family Reunion Thank you Len for the following report; At the recent Joachim family gathering at Liz & Ron James' home, Len. Apple alerted the family to the fact that Liz had just received a Jewish Community Council of Victoria award for her contribution to community historical research. Liz was nominated for the award by the Australian Jewish Historical Society and it was presented to her by His Excellency Professor David de Kretser, Governor of Victoria. The Joachim family is well aware of Liz's superb work in the research and presentation of our family history and it is no surprise to learn that she has been honoured with this prestigious award. Congratulations, Liz, from all the family. Ron and Liz were also thanked for their hospitality and making their lovely home available for this family gathering. The well presented family history was all set out for us to see again. There is always something of interest to see and learn! To those who did not attend on this occasion, please make a point of trying to do so in the future as we all must participate and be contributors if we want to gain the benefits of learning our family heritage. June Joachim Reunion “To be or not to be, that is the question”? It has been proposed to hold the Annual Joachim June Family Reunion Sunday 3rd. June. I require some indication from “The Family” if you wish to continue with this Joachim date. Jenny and I are happy to host this function but do require feedback from you. Item from David Apple The Herald, August 1952 Society Burglars PC’s Courage Dramatic Arrest Strange Case of the Giddy Dog (Roast Veal Recipe Page 10 ) The Lemon tree was perfectly positioned , well watered. Round and around we went, Ron, David and Mickey the kelpie/lab. Who was chasing who? All we know is we were giddy! “Let’s go round the corner.” Moama. Mrs. Berkowicz’s place. A beautiful garden in Orrong Road. Tennis court, aviary, peacocks strutting their stuff, fountains, goldfish lurking lazily by the lilies, and that was just the nature strip! But, climbing fences was our gig. The Game was afoot! Moama Mayhem! Mrs. B’s housekeeper was alone and Royal Worcester with her memories, a lady of many Winters but too few Summers. She was also short sighted. Unwilling to recognize young Ron as Ada’s nephew (truly). Oh my giddy aunt! Trembling!--- D24? In the garden……………on the roof……….4 of them……….sweaty……….MEN…….four dogs……I’ve locked the doors. PC Plod arrived breathless with self importance. His bicycle seemed to be in good order. No back up in those days. He wore a large black helmet on his ferret like head. Who said “A policeman’s lot is not a happy one”? “A little spot of burglary--------------Ow many goldfish you kids pinched? Come on now.” “We run em in, we run em in”, he sang hysterical. “Oh yeah! She’s your Aunt and St.Kilda’ll do it this year too!” Arrested at last. A sorry procession indeed returned to Redcourt Avenue. Mrs. James statement to the police. Auntie Beryl was dignified but under whelmed by the goings on, after all it was nearly dinner time and the veal was particularly nice ( Recipe page 10). There was enough excitement in the house already. Uncle Ernest had bought the wonder of the age, a Fyreside Kerosene Heater. Yes, Mickey, no dog, out, no sister. The gravy needs stirring. Would you like a cup of tea? Satiated ! He slunk off, his patch was safe! The thing is ………………. Did PC Plod have a flat tire as he wobbled back to the cop shop and who was the joker in the pack? We shall never know!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thank you David. Family Questionnaire. If as yet you have not completed the Family Questionnaire that appeared in the last two newsletters, please do so.
