Nuts for the Monkeys
Some months ago we were talking to Len Apple and he came out with the saying ‘Nuts for the monkeys”. My Father had also used this phrase. We came to the conclusion that this was another “Joachimism”.  Do any of you remember family phrases we could share? While I don’t think there will need to be additions to “The Oxford Dictionary” it would be fun compiling a list of family sayings.  Please send them into me.

Beware of the Beetroot.

Every time the weather turns hot and the salad season is upon us I think of my Grandfather Jo. I always remember one very hot Sunday when the 6 of us were gathered around the table in the sunroom having our Sunday Lunch, very much a ritual in our Family. Yes, salad was on the menu.To try to make Jenny and I laugh, Pa who was a great joker, was poking his tongue in and out with a large piece of beetroot on it. Gran, Sadie scolded him and warned him what would happen and of course it did. Beetroot all over Mum’s best tablecloth. I don’t know who yelled the louder, Mum or Gran. But of course, Pa and Dad just laughed. Beetroot has never been the same!
Do you have any family stories you would be happy to share?

Leah Ottolangui and Hannah Bensabat :
While searching the 1881 English Census records on Ancestry.com, I found Leah Ottolangui (spelt Ottolaugui, I would think a typo.) and Hannah Bensabat. They were living as “Inmates of the Spanish and Portuguese Jews Alms House, Heneage Lane. It shows a family connection and obviously, that these women were so poor that they were in an alms house. No husbands there, have a look at their ages. Very good for this time in history.
Has anyone any comments or ideas for these ladies. How did they spend their days?
