4. Collection of short stories.

Up-coming Dates

Carn’ the Saints!!

Joachim Annual Get Together

Reyna Ottolangui married Abraham Joachim on 10th June 1868.  Therefore close to this date it is appropriate to hold the annual Joachim Get Together.

We thought most of you would prefer Sunday 11th. June.

This is not planned to be a big, formal event just an informal family gathering. Any family member is welcome whether you are coming to the football on 1st July or not. Some of you may like to attend both dates.

Jenny and I will be at Bonbons Cafe on the corner of Hawthorn and Balaclava Roads from 3.00pm to 5.00pm on 11th June.  If you wish, come and join us.  We are not booking tables or ordering a special afternoon tea.  (The kitchen closes at 4.00 pm but there will still be tea/coffee and cakes). Bonbons close at 5.00 pm. Just a gentle reminder that you need  to pay for what you order as my budget does not run to shouting all of you afternoon tea.

This “Joachim Get Together” is for all Joachim Family Members, men, women and children.

Exciting News
Yes, those two very clever ladies, Liz and Merle  have produced the “Joachim  Website". I think it is brilliant! Thank you very, very much Liz and Merle  I know all of you will enjoy this so go to:

www.oocities.org/lzbthjoachim/

I’m sure both of these ladies would be thrilled to hear from you either with additional information or with feedback.

Joachim Ideas

My creative juices are flowing this morning!  Many of you have expressed the wish for more family get    togethers but as we all seem to have different likes and dislikes as well as work and family commitments, I thought I would suggest some ways some of us could regularly see one another.
Basically I would suggest the two main annual get togethers (June for all of us and a December ladies afternoon tea. (Maybe the men would like to organize a get together this year?)  The second suggestion is to form one of the following groups for those of you with the specific interest. The dates of meetings can be advertised in the newsletter as well as contact details.  Following are some of the suggestions I have come up with, some of you may like to suggest something else.  It would be up to members to decide when you meet, how regularly and where you meet. The groups would be in addition to the two main functions. These are only suggestions, ignore if you wish.  Even better, have you any ideas?
Please email them to me.

Joachim Book Club
Joachim Scrabble Group
Joachim Card (eg. poker, solitaire) Group
Joachim Chess Group
Joachim Walking Group, this could be daily, several times a week or once a week/month to explore/walk around a different area of interest.
Joachim Bush Walking Group
Joachim Tennis Group, meet weekly/monthly for a game
Joachim Tai Chi Group, meet weekly/monthly for this gentle exercise. Perhaps a cup of coffee/tea and chat afterwards.
Joachim Art Appreciation Group. Can meet at a home or gallery to discuss a specific artist or style. If  this was at a home you could take it in turns at preparing a short talk on a topic and illustrating it with slides or books. Discussion to follow.
Joachim Music Appreciation Group. Similar to the above where a specific piece is played and discussed or selections form a composer or style. Follow this with supper/morning tea etc.
How many of you play a musical instrument?  You could form the Joachim String Quartet? or
The Swinging Joachims? Music get togethers. Just a group to sit and listen to music follow by supper/afternoon tea etc.

Joachim Embroidery group. Monthly for embroiderers to sit and sew, talk and help one another if they are have a sewing problem. Yes, we can teach beginners and yes, men make excellent embroiderers.
Joachim Quilters Group. All of the above is relevant.
Joachim Knitting Group. All of the above is relevant.
Joachim Jewish Studies Group. A group for those who want to understand more about Judaism, its beliefs observations and traditions. This would be a group for all, not just the Jewish family members. It would explain the history, philosophy, beliefs. Have you often wondered what is the correct behaviour and thing to say at a wedding, funeral, what are the rules of Kosher.(Do hope I have this right, I don’t want to offend any of you.)
Joachim Food/Restaurant Group. For those of you who like to eat out, why not set a regular time and meet at a favourite restaurant or try a different flavour each time.
Joachim Travel Group. Two ways to tackle this. 1. Pick a country for each meeting where everyone brings a predetermined number of slides, artifacts, books on the country. Not a problem if you haven’t been there as you can learn about the country. Someone may like to prepare a five minute talk on the country ie, things to see, history, money etc. 2. One person or a couple relates a trip.
Joachim Garden Group. Each week/month you could visit a different public garden and/or discuss types of gardens and or plants. For example, the history of gardens, water gardens, Japanese gardens, famous gardens, vegetables, tulips, trees, roses, Ida Sackville, Mrs Jeekle.
Joachim 5 Minute Profiles. This would be a relaxed group where each group member would be asked to relate a 5 minute family story or episode. It could be from your own life or a relative. I would love to tell bout my dear Father’s days when he coached and scored for the Sandringham Cricket Club. Although this was very special for Dad and the highlight of his week, it managed to take the full attention of the four of us for the full day, if not longer. Won’t tell all here, perhaps we can get this group going and I can then give you the abridged edition.

Short Stories

Below is a copy of a short story I wrote for the first Joachim Newsletter. I was thinking that if we, yes all of us, could contribute at least one small story we could put them together to form a book. This could then be produced for family members, or we could self publish, or we could approach a publisher. Just hink of the great book launch we could have!

Please read and enjoy. If you have already read, enjoy again!

My father, Harold Cowen would tell the story of my Grandmother’s famous family supper parties. Gran (Sadie Cowen nee Joachim) loved these regular events and went to much trouble.  She was both a great cook and craftswoman, consequently the table was set with one of her hand-embroidered tablecloths and at suppertime, there were always sandwiches and her home baked cakes and slices.  Present were Aunt Bec, Sissie (Susan), her husband Bert Chapman and Mrs Bloom(Matilda) and her husband Abraham.
Mrs Bloom was the matriarch.  Apparently the day her father Abraham died, without a word, she arose from her usual seat at the dining table and sat down in Abraham’s and no one dared to dispute the new “Head of the Family.”
Anyway, Pa (my grandfather)  would wait till everyone had arrived and then sneak out of the room.  He would collect Mrs. Bloom’s coat, hat and gloves and strategically place a few tennis balls, go around to the front door and ring the bell.  Innocently Gran would answer the door to hear someone say in a very loud voice “Its Mrs Bloom.”  The real Mrs. Bloom was not amused!

I Still  Need Your Help.

I still do not have contact details for all family members. The list I am working from is limited to people I am aware of so please pass on this email.

As always, I am endeavouring to contact as many Joachim descendants as possible without compromising your privacy so please email me addresses of family members who wish to be included.

If you would prefer not to be included, please let me know.

Lastly, don’t forget;
11th June, 3.00 –5.00pm Get Together for all Joachim Men, Women and Children.

Final word, if you have any items for the June Newsletter, please send them now.

Thanks again, Merle and Liz.
