A South Devon SAUNDERS family

Fourth Generation

4.5 Mary Elizabeth Godwin (Annie) SAUNDERS (William James Pepperell SAUNDERS , William SAUNDERS , Ann ) was born on 6 Apr 1885 in Brixham, Devon, and died on 28 Jan 1966.

William James Pepperell's first child was named "Ann Maria Godwin" in the Saunders family bible but recorded as "Mary Elizabeth" in the civil births register. In 1901 she was recorded as "Annie", but in an extant letter dated 1918 she signs herself "Liz". To the compiler of this web site, she was always known as "Auntie Annie", so that is the name which will be used here.

Annie married George (1) FISHER on 15 Jun 1909. George, son of Brixham carter Henry FISHER and his wife Blanche, was born on 6 Mar 1885 in Brixham and died on 21 Sep 1964.

4.6 Martha Frances SAUNDERS (William James Pepperell SAUNDERS , William SAUNDERS , Ann ) was born on 2 Jun 1886 in Brixham, and died on 21 Dec 1963 in Okehampton.

In 1901, Martha was recorded as living with her maternal grandparents, Richard and Sarah PHILLIPS, in Prospect Road, Brixham. She moved to Dartmouth with her parents in about 1895, and at the time of her marriage was living in Ford Brow, Dartmouth. The couple lived at Medway Place, Plymouth, for a time. There they kept photos of Martha's brother Wilfrid and her husband's brother Bert, both in soldier's uniform, on either side of the window in the parlour; both had been killed in World War I. Martha was cremated at Efford Cemetery, where a memorial plaque is to be found.

Martha married Alfred George GIFFORD at Dartmouth Congregational Church at 8 am on 31 Jul 1910. Alfred, son of  merchant sailer Frederick GIFFORD and his wife Emily, was born on 27 Sep 1885 in Dartmouth and died on 17 Mar 1970 in Okehampton, Devon.

Alf was a carpenter by trade. He was involved in building the Brittania Royal Naval College, Dartmouth (completed 1905) and claimed that he and others carved their names and the date on the underside of the wooden blocks used for the floors. In 1910, he was living at 18 Sussex Road, Ford, Devonport. During World War I, he worked in Devonport dockyard as an iron caulker, sealing the riveted plates of ships. Alf was also cremated at Efford Cemetery.

Sam was a master hairdresser. Apprenticed to Messrs. Ford & Wise in 1905, he started his own hairdresser and tobacconist business in 1910 at St Georges Square, Dartmouth, shortly thereafter moving to 11 Fairfax Place. He enlisted in the British Army on 10 Dec 1915, when he was reported to be 5' 9" tall and with overlapping toes. As driver 91080, he served until 29 Apr 1919, including 21 months in France. Returning to Dartmouth, he maintained his business¾moving sometime between 1921 and 1927 to 5 Newcomen Road¾until his death.

Samuel married Elsie GUNN, daughter of Salcombe mariner Nicholas GUNN and his wife Mary Ann, on 23 Nov 1913. Elsie was born on 20 Apr 1891 in Salcombe, Devon, and died on 19 Nov 1962.

4.10 Louisa Katherine SAUNDERS (William James Pepperell SAUNDERS , William SAUNDERS , Ann ) was born on 28 Apr 1896 in Dartmouth and died of bronchopneumonia and cancer on 15 Oct 1973 in Bristol.

Louisa's first job was as a waitress at the Grand Hotel, Torquay. After her marriage, she lived first in Ivy Cottage, Ivy Lane, but moved to Avery's Meadow (221 Victoria Road) in 1927 and then to 73 Victoria Road in 1932. Louisa ran this house as an occasional boarding house, taking in bed and breakfast guests¾especially around Regatta time. (The present owners of 73 Victoria Road run it as a permanent bed and breakfast business, having joined two of the ground floor rooms together as a dining room.). In 1949, the couple moved to 129 Gilda Crescent, Bristol, in order to bring them nearer to their sons Leonard and Stanley, to give their son Michael the chance of a better education, and to take Louisa away from a climate where she was developing bronchitis. Louisa died in this house.

Louisa married Albert Ernest MITCHELMORE (Bert), son of Dartmouth painter Charles Frederick MITCHELMORE and Caroline Louisa née TUCKER and himself a painter, on 4 Mar 1922 in Dartmouth Congregational Church. Bert was born on 24 Nov 1892 in Dartmouth and died on 2 Oct 1968 in Bristol. Lily married Albert HEARD (Bert) on 1 Mar 1925. Albert was born on 1 Feb 1899 in Kilkhampton, Cornwall, the son of agricultural labourer Thomas HEARD and his wife Grace née BONETTO, and died on 25 Jun 1983 at his daughter Grace's home at 128 Kings Road, Biggin Hill, Kent.
Bert was a carpenter by trade, and spent most of his working life maintaining the Dartmouth Royal Naval College. He was very good a billiards¾so good, nobody would play him. He was also excellent at draughts (probably at least county level). He was a very good boxer as well. He once went the full 15 rounds with a light-heavy weight at the college when he was a light weight himself. But his best skill was singing. He was an Italian Tenor (well, half Italian) and used to sing all the classics like O Sole Mio. His children claimed they never heard a better tenor.

Bert's other claim to fame was a cameo appearance as a messenger in Maurice Elvey's 1939 film of the Kay Walsh version of Sons of the Sea. The film concerned a young Naval College student who solved a murder. It was famous because it is one of only two fiction feature-length films which used Dufaycolor.

When Bert retired in February 1964, he was presented with a very nice barometer/thermometer in wood and brass by the captain of the college.

Lily and Albert had the following children:

As a youngest son in a poor family, Bob had to share a pair of boots with his brother Wilfred. But when he was still a schoolboy, Bob got a job riding on the back of the Kingsbridge stage coach. He had to jump off to deliver the papers to the village shops, and got to blow the brass coach horn as the coach returned to Dartmouth. At 13, he left school and joined the Gas Company to train as a fitter. He stayed with them for 51 years, moving to South Brent in 1955 when the Dartmouth works closed down.

Bob married Winifred WOODGATE ("Winn") on 1 Aug 1925 in St. Saviour's Church, Dartmouth. Winn was born at 36 Clarence Street on 20 Jun 1905, the daughter of Elliot and Clara WOODGATE, and died on 3 Feb 1984.
