About Piccolo Continued

After the year passes the two Saiyans arrive, Nappa (the tall idiot) and Prince Vegeta (the smart shrimp). Gohan has the ability, but doesn't use it as the battle begins. During the battle the Saiyans tell Piccolo he is a Namekian and Piccolo realizes he's an alien (big shock there, the green skin didn't give anything away).  Meanwhile, Goku is trying to get back to Earth in time to save the day, however before he gets there the Saiyans kill Tien, Chiaotzu, and Yamcha. Finally Gohan fights Nappa and gets his little tail kicked. As Nappa goes to blow Gohan to oblivion Piccolo, in an unexpected act of love, throws himself in front of the blast and is mortally wounded. Piccolo tells Gohan how the little boy has changed the Namekian's life. However when Piccolo died, Kami died as well and without them the dragon balls were useless.

Gohan and the others decide to go to Namek and see if they can use those Dragon Balls to wish all the others back to life, since the Earth's Dragon Balls are gone and won't make the same wish twice. However on Namek they (Krillen, Bulma, and Gohan) find Vegeta there as well as the evil Freeza (bad guy) and the race to find the Dragon Balls begin. Freeza and Vegeta trying to wish for immortality and the Z-fighters trying to keep them from that and wishing their friends back to life. With the help of local Nameks they guys get the Dragon Balls after Goku arrived on the planet (really complicated I would suggest going to an episode guide to get it all, I really cut out alot of cool stuff) Anyhow, the guys summon the Namekian dragon (which would grant THREE wishes to the Earth dragon's single wish) and wish Piccolo back to life and for him to be on Namek.

When Piccolo arrived on Namek he found a young Namekian who was a mirror image of himself. This Namek was Nail, a warrior who fought with Freeza and nearly died. Nail convinced Piccolo they should merge (fuse bodies perminantely). They did so and this gave Piccolo a power surge and a knowledge of Freeza's moves. Piccolo fought with Freeza as Goku healed from an injury during a battle for the Dragon Balls. Piccolo stood his ground for a while, but in the end it was Goku who arrived in time for Freeza to murder a young Namekian child named Dente (will be important later) and kill Vegeta. Piccolo leads Gohan away but not before Krillen is also murdered by Freeza. In a rage Goku becomes the legendary Super Saiyan and battles Freeza. Piccolo really does nothing more beside going back to Earth and not going to New Namek after all the other warriors were wished back.

Even thought Piccolo isn't the nicest character we sense that he and Goku really are friends by this point. After Namek Goku disappears and Piccolo stays on to watch over Gohan for him. During this time Garlic Jr., son of Garlic Snr (mentioned earlier) comes back from the Dead Zone (the Dead Zone is a DB movie and I don't want to get into those since the timing throws off the dates of the series, again if you want more info go to an episode/movie guide). Piccolo seems to be under Garlic Jr.'s control while the little gnome holds Kami (remember if something bad happens to Kami it happens to Piccolo). When the moment comes Piccolo shows he's a great actor and saves Kami, but there is still a I-don't-give-a-damn-about-you attitude from Piccolo. A big battle occurs and in the end the Z-fighters defeat the bad guy, save the world, and act like normal people for the last ten minutes of the series. Piccolo disappears after the victory as if it was no big deal, even though it really was to him as well.

The series goes on from there, but by the Garlic Jr. Saga Piccolo is a good guy and we realize that happened during his time training Gohan. Piccolo and Gohan share a special friendship and Piccolo seems the closest to Gohan, Goku, and Krillen, seeing as the four of them are usually the strongest fighters and the ones who give the biggest damn about the Earth. Piccolo is the brains and backbone of the Z-fighters, he sees the best solutions to problems and now feels compassion for other living things. By the end of the Trunks Saga most viewers see that Piccolo is the tall, dark...well green, and quiet member of the Z-Fighters. Personally, I think he's cute too. ^-^
