Sabrina is the 17 year-old heroine of this story written in the 1930's.
Sabrina lives with her too-busy-with-himself father and annoying Aunt Effie. When they tell her that they're moving from their small apartment in London to a mansion in the country that her father had rented, Sabrina doesn't bother fighting.
Always being too curious for her own good, Sabrina finds a locked room on the 3rd floor. Picking the lock one day, she finds a Heaven fit to her tastes. Books, books and more books litter this room, and it was comfortably furnished.
Finding a few items belonging to a man in her newfound haven, Sabrina starts to wonder who the owner was. She uses her over-active imagination and makes a whole person out of the items she finds. Meanwhile, the owner of the room is in a desert somewhere, fighting in the War.
One day, a car pulls up just the way Sabrina always imagined her "friend" would. But this was
definantly not what she imagined he would look like. This man--George, the brother of her friend-- was short and round, and he brought the worst of news.
The friend that Sabrina never knew had just died over in the desert. He had come to close up "her" room and take away some things. Sobbing, Sabrina ran upstairs and shut herself in her now-dead friend's room. When she was always in there before, she felt warm and comforted; but now she felt cold and alone.
George and Aunt Effie came up a while later to take somethings away, but Sabrina wouldn't let them. George leaves and Aunt Effie make Sabrina leave the room. Over the time, Sabrina receives a kitten.
One day, Sabrina decides to see the room again, and her kitten was drawn toward the window seat. The room doesn't feel cold and lonely now; it feels even more comforting now than it ever did! Sabrina looks to the window seat and noticed the fur on her kitten being rubbed.
Gasping, she whispers, 'You've found him.'
Sabrina now knows that her friend's spirit is in the room and she looks through some of his books; she never knew his name. She finds one and reads, 'Hilary Shenstone'.
Ecstatic that she now has a name to put with the face, Sabrina talks to Hilary as if he was able to answer her. Aunt Effie, meanwhile, has made up her mind to send Sabrina away to school. Sabrina is told this and she runs away, without thinking. Everyone follows her and she gets taken back to Nun's Farthing. Aunt Effie promises not to send her to school, but they almost move away.
When they pull out of the driveway, Aunt Effie doesn't see the other car coming and Sabrina is thrown out on impact.
"Hilary, something's happened- I don't have to go, after all-" Sabrina said as she climbed the stairs to the room again. And then she saw him.
Adorable book, but the ending kinda leaves more to be desired.
