MEET JOE BLACK
~ A Martin Brest film ~

He's expecting you...

"If you multiply that times infinity and take it to the depths of forever,
you will perhaps get just a glimpse of what I am talking about."

~ Joe Black ~

Brad Pitt & Claire Forlani as
Joe Black & Susan Parrish

Bill Parrish (Anthony Hopkins) has it all - success,
wealth, and power. Days before his 65th birthday
he receives a visit from a mysterious stranger,
Joe Black (Brad Pitt), who soon reveals himself as
"Death" and suddenly insinuates his way into Parrish's
life--both in his business and private affairs.

Parrish's family and colleagues begin to question
the nature of his relationship to his inseparable companion
Joe who appears to influence much of Parrish's moves.

In exchange for "extra time", Bill Parrish agrees to
serve as Joe's earthly guide. But will he regret his
choice when Joe unexpectedly falls in love with Bill's
beautiful daughter Susan (Claire Forlani).

The consequences of this romance are profound,
complicated and bittersweet, for revealed only to
William Parrish is the fact that Joe Black is actually
the personification of Death -- awaiting for the proper
moment to guide Parrish to the next world.

Bill Parrish to his daugther:

"I want you to get swept away. I want you to levitate.
I want you to sing with rapture and dance like a dervish.
Be deliriously happy. Or at least leave yourself open to be.
I know it's a cornball thing but love is passion,
obsession, someone you can't live without.
If you don't start with that, what are you going to end up with?
I say fall head over heels. Find someone you can
love like crazy and who'll love you the same way back.
And how do you find him? Forget your head and listen
to your heart... Run the risk, if you get hurt, you'll come back.
Because, the truth is there is no sense living your
life without this. To make the journey and not
fall deeply in love -- well, you haven't lived a life at all.
You have to try. Because if you haven't tried,
you haven't lived... Stay open. Who knows?
Lightning could strike."

Joe Black:

"How are you doing?"

Parrish:

"What the hell do you care?"

Joe Black:

"I was just asking, Bill."

Parrish:

" You want to know, I'll tell you.
You're looking at a man who tonight is not
about to walk through the Valley of the Shadow
of Death, he's galloping into it. And the same time,
the business he built with his own hands and his
own head is being commandeered by a couple of cheap
pirates. And, oh yes, I almost forgot, my
daughter's fallen in love with Death."

Joe Black:

" And I'm in love with your daughter."

Parrish:

"Say again?"

Joe Black:

"I'm in love with your daughter,
and I'm taking her with me tonight.

Parrish:

"You're what?"

Joe Black:

"I think you heard me, Bill."

Parrish:

" You're not taking Susan anywhere.
And what the hell does that mean anyway?
I thought we had a deal."

Joe Black:

"I'm sorry, Bill."

Parrish:

"Susan is my daughter, she has a wonderful
life ahead of her and you're going to deprive her
of it and you're telling me you're sorry?
Well, I'm sorry, apology not accepted."

Joe Black:

"I love her, Bill. She is all that I ever wanted,
and I've never wanted for anything because I've never
wanted anything before, if you can understand."

Parrish:

"How perfect for you - to take whatever
you want because it pleases you. It's not love."

Joe Black:

"Then what is it?"

Parrish:

"Some aimless infatuation in which,
for the moment, you feel like indulging.
It's missing everything that matters."

Joe Black:

"Which is what?"

Parrish:

"Trust, responsibility, taking the weight,
for your choices and feelings and spending the rest
of your life living up to them. And above all,
not hurting the object of your love."

Joe Black:

"So that's what love is?"

Parrish:

"Multiply it by infinity and take it to
the death of forever and you will still have
barely a glimpse of what I am talking about."

Joe Black:

"Those were my words, Bill."

Parrish:

"Well, they're mine now."

Bill Parrish:

"It's hard to let go, isn't it?"

Joe Black:

"Yes it is, Bill"

Bill Parrish:

"That's life. What can I tell you?"

Bill Parrish:

"Should I be afraid?"

Joe Black:

"Not a man like you."
