Vegan - Why Not?
It is believed that vegetarianism was first practiced
as early as the 2nd millennium BC on the Indian subcontinent.
Among other religions present at that time, Hinduism
preached that vegetarianism is necessary for spiritual progress.
Vegetarians in Europe used to be referred to as
Pythagoreans after the 6th centaury BC Greek Philosopher
Pythagoras advocated a vegetarian diet for its
nutritional and ethical values.
He claimed "As long as Man continues to be the ruthless
destroyer of lower living beings he will never
know health or peace. For as long as men massacre animals,
they will kill each other. Indeed, he who sows the
seed of murder and pain cannot reap joy and love."
Buddhist have practiced vegetarianism since 5th centaury BC.
In 1847 the first vegetarian society was formed
in Ramsgate, Kent UK. They introduced the term
Vegetarian after the Greek word "vegetus" meaning lively.
The international Vegetarian Union was formed in 1908.
The number of Vegetarian restaurants are growing more and more.
Present day it is approaching 1000 restaurants listed in the UK.
There are low calorie and vegetarian recipes available
whether you're staying in hotels, attending conventions,
traveling by train or plain.
Today, Indian vegetarians, are estimated to make up
more than 70% of the world's vegetarians.
Benjamin Franklin (1706-1790), a vegetarian since
the age of sixteen, later renounced that way of life
during a sea voyage where he witnessed a fish cut open
revealing another fish inside. He concluded that
it's nature's way for one species to eat another.
George Bernard Shaw (1856-1960) said "The average life
expectancy of a meat eater is 63. I am on the verge
of 85 and still work as hard as ever. I have lived
quite long enough, and I am still trying to die;
but I simply cannot do it. A single beef steak
would finish me, but I cannot bring myself to swallow it.
I am oppressed with dread of living forever.
That is the only disadvantage of vegetarianism."
Clearly low calorie and vegetarian recipes have a long
and spirited history, as it continues to grow and
influence around the world.
De Vegetarier (The Vegetarian)
"The title speaks for itself.
The animals are no longer important in our food chain,
and gather around the woman.
The depicted animals are also vegetarian."
