US 385 ends where it enters the boundary of Big Bend National Park. Shown below
is the last marker with a "South" tab:
Elbert,
Mar. 2007
Just beyond that junction you can see the last southbound reassurance marker,
shown close-up below:
Elbert,
Mar. 2007
You can see "Persimmon Gap" through the Santiago Mountains not far
ahead. But just before entering the gap, you enter the Park, and the US 385
designation ends:
Elbert, Mar.
2007
The road continues ahead for 29 miles, to a "T" intersection called
Panther Junction. That's the location of Park Headquarters, but between here
and that point, there are no more references to US 385, because the road is
maintained by the National Park Service.
Heading the opposite direction, the first US 385 sign is posted just as you
exit the Park boundary:
Elbert,
Mar. 2007
I think those are the Glass Mountains on the horizon. The green mileage sign
ahead is shown close-up below:
Elbert, Mar. 2007
Got gas? The first assembly with a "North" tab is just ahead, at
the junction with Ranch 2627:
Elbert,
Mar. 2007
At far left is the backside of the assembly shown in the first photo on this
page. The map below illustrates the roads in this area:
