US 466 [I]

Los Lunas, NM

(near Bernardo, NM)

(Note: since I don't have access to a comprehensive collection of historical road atlases, much of the info below is based on the research of Robert Droz; click here to view his site.)

This route was never actually signed in the field. However, it did show up on some maps from the earliest days of the US highway system. It was a necessary route under the original 1925 plan, because that plan did not have US 85 running all along the Rio Grande valley in New Mexico. But US 85 was there in the final 1926 numbering, thus eliminating the necessity of US 466.

The photos below are courtesy of James Allen, May 2001. This first one shows where the north end of US 466 would've been, in Los Lunas.

That's looking north on NM hwy. 314 (historic US 85). The next intersection (NM 6) used to be US 66.

The south end of US 466 would've been at US 60 near Bernardo. This photo is looking south on NM 304.

US 60 heads south from here, but under the 1925 plan it was US 466 that was slated to head north from here through Belen to Los Lunas.
