In 1949 the south end of US 321 was extended to its current terminus at US
17 in Hardeeville. Two years later, US 601 was extended south from Salisbury
NC. It junctioned US 321 near Pineland SC, and the two routes were co-signed
to a common terminus at Hardeeville. I'm told this duplex lasted until 1996,
although I have Rand McNallys dating back to 1977 that all show US 601 ending
at Pineland (its current terminus).
Apparently US 321 is not co-signed with US 17 along the half-mile stretch down
to I-95's interchange 5, although it would make sense to do that. In fact, US
321 is signed from northbound I-95 as if it does begin at the freeway:

But Alex reports that if you take that exit and head north on US 17, all US
321 signs include a "TO" banner. Shortly you come to the junction
shown below:

There we're looking north on US 17 at the south beginning of US 321 (and that's
also the historic south beginning of US 601). I-95 is about a half-mile behind
the camera. As you take that left turn off US 17, the shot below shows the first
northbound sign:

Heading the opposite direction (south on US 17), drivers wanting northbound
US 321 are directed to use SC hwy. 46:

This saves about a half-mile over going all the way down to the actual junction
with US 321, which Alex reports is not signed at all.
Brian reports the signage on southbound 321 was extremely poor: no "End" sign,
no indication that it's US 17 you're joining, and no US 17 trailblazers until
south of I-95! That's why the photo below is devoid of anything distinguishing:

That's the last stretch of US 321 before its junction with US 17.
