BON JOVI
Sayreville, NJ boys, Jon Bon Jovi (vocals), Richie Sambora (guitars), Alec John Such (bass), Tico Torres (drums), and David Bryan (keyboards) formed the group Bon Jovi in 1983, one of the most successful pop-metal acts of the 80s.
Combining Def Leppard’s tuneful rock with Bruce Springsteen’s real-life lyrics, Bon Jovi pushed their way into multi-platinum success.  Their debut, self-titled album went platinum, thanks to the top 40 hit “Runaway”.  The 1985 follow-up 7800 Degrees Fahrenheit, was considerably good, containing “In and Out of Love”, but wasn’t the band’s idea of success.
Hiring professional songwriter Desmond Child to collaborate, the band wrote a slew of tuneful songs for their next album.  Slippery When Wet was released in 1986 and immediately became a hit.  The album eventually sold 12 million copies, fueled by the anthemic #1 singles “Livin’ on a Prayer” and “You Give Love a Bad Name” as well as the top 10 “Wanted Dead or Alive”.  Their videos received strong MTV airplay and the band began to tour relentlessly.  Their 1988 blockbuster New Jersey was just as successful as its predecessor, selling 7 million copies and ushering 2 more #1’s (“Bad Medicine” & “I’ll Be There For You”) and 3 top 10 singles (“Born to Be My Baby”, “Lay Your Hands on Me” & “Living in Sin”).  The band continued their never-ending concert tour and gained fame with several awards.  But as the 90s approached, the homesick and exhausted band went on hiatus.
Jon Bon Jovi launched his successful solo career in 1990, writing the entire Young Guns II soundtrack, which featured the #1 “Blaze of Glory”  The band re-united in 1992 and released Keep the Faith, which went double-platinum despite new trends in rock music.  The album included “Bed of Roses” and the hit title track.  Cross Road, a greatest hits compilation was released, along with the ballad “Always”, in 1994.  These Days, released in 1996, was disappointing considering the band’s previous superstardom successful.  But after a long break, the band came back strong in 2000 with the smash hit “It’s My Life” from their new album Crush.  The band pursued a successful concert tour and released One Wild Night Live in 2001.  The band was also among those performing at the historic, charitable Concert for New York City in Sept. 2001.  Despite the many changes in rock music, Bon Jovi remains one of the few pop-metal bands of the 80s that is still performing today.
