By 1892:- Anderton is a small township, a mile and a half north-west from Northwich, intersected by the river Weaver and Trent and Mersey canal. The Weaver Navigation Company have erected powerful machinery here for lifting canal boats with their loads to and from the river Weaver to the Trent and Mersey canal, the latter flowing at a considerable elevation above the river. Here are several extensive salt works, belonging to Brunner, Mond & Co. and the Earl of Mansfield, and extensive sheds, warehouses etc. for storage of pottery material, stoneware and other merchandise, belonging to the Manchester Ship Canal Company. AH Smith-Barry esq. MP, JP, and Brunner, Mond & Co. are the chief landowners. The area is 481 acres; rateable value £7,171. The population in 1891 was 313. Letters through Northwich.
