Anderton: In 1841 there were 58 houses, and 331 inhabitants. Population in 1801: 191; in 1831: 327. Rateable value, £6,764. This township is intersected by the river Weaver, and the North Staffordshire Canal, and there are several extensive salt works, which are held in lease under Lord Stanley, who is the principal landowner and lord of the manor. Lord Mansfield and JHS Berry Esq. are also proprietors. The township is chiefly on high ground, which rises abruptly from the river Weaver. The Anderton Company, for the conveyance of merchandise, have extensive warehouses here. The vicarial tithes are commuted for £8. 8s. and the rectorial for £47. |
By 1892:- Anderton is a small township, a mile and a half north-west from Northwich, intersected by the river Weaver and Trent and Mersey canal. The Weaver Navigation Company have erected powerful machinery here for lifting canal boats with their loads to and from the river Weaver to the Trent and Mersey canal, the latter flowing at a considerable elevation above the river. Here are several extensive salt works, belonging to Brunner, Mond & Co. and the Earl of Mansfield, and extensive sheds, warehouses etc. for storage of pottery material, stoneware and other merchandise, belonging to the Manchester Ship Canal Company. AH Smith-Barry esq. MP, JP, and Brunner, Mond & Co. are the chief landowners. The area is 481 acres; rateable value £7,171. The population in 1891 was 313. Letters through Northwich. Barnton is the nearest money order office and the nearest telegraph office. Wall letter box cleared at 6.20pm on weekdays only. |
