Oakmere, 1850 & 1892
In 1850, OAKMERE is described as an extensive township & scattered village, 10 miles E. by N. from Chester, containing 2,800 acres of land.  In 1831 there were 33 Houses and 195 inhabitants.  Rateable value, exclusive of the Forest Land, £833. 15s.  About three parts of this township is the property of the Crown.  The other principal landowners are Lord Delamere, George Wilbraham Esq., Mr Samuel Hornby, Miss Johnson, Mr Edward Worthington, and Samuel Woodhouse, Esq.  there are also a number of smaller proprietors.

    That portion of the Forest of Delamere next to the Mersey was called the Forest of Mara or Mere, probably from the large mere or lake which covers a considerable extent of land in this township.  And hence arose the name of
Oak-Mere.  The township is bounded on the East by Norley and the road from Frodsham to Tarporley, and by the Eddisbury, Westwardly by the Kelsall and Ashton, on the North the before-named road from Ashton to Norley, and on the south by the Chester and Northwich turnpike road.  The Magistrates hold a Petty session every month at the Vale Royal Abbey Inn.

OAKMERE is a township in the Union & County Court District of Northwich, 1.1/2 miles from Delamere Church.  Here is a Mere of 36 acres in extent.  The principal part of this township, formerly forest land, is in the possession of the Crown.  Lord Delamere and Randle Wilbraham Esq., of Delamere House, Cuddington, are also large landowners.  The population in 1891 was 392, and area 2,800 acres;  rateable value, £3,458.  Letters through Northwich.  The nearest money order & telegraph office is at Sandiway.  There is a Wall Letter Box, cleared at 5.50pm., Sundays 10.30am.
