Hi, I'm a self-supporting Vet student in my first year of Veterinary School. I've always been someone who has worked hard to get to where I am. As you may or may not know, Veterinary School is 4 years in duration and I'm looking at accumulating around $100K worth of debt by the time I am finished. I've always wanted this career because I want to help animals and owners live healthy, happy lives. I am one of the older students in my class, and I find it difficult to be self-supporting when I can't work due to the intense curriculum. I do get financial aid, but it's February, and I'm already out of the little money they gave me back in January.
To add to the burden of paying for school, I've adopted a few animals along the way that have some problems. I have Roxie, a dog I found on I40 who ended up having a broken hip, bilateral pubic bone fractures, a tail fracture, and had been shot with buckshot. I also found out she was deaf in both ears and blind in one eye (congenital defects). Therefore, I knew if I had taken her to a shelter, they would euthanize her. In addition, I adopted Mickey, who was .75 pound when I found him. He has herpes virus (a chronic respiratory problem). He is managable most of the time, but he does need some medical help now and again. He had growth problems and he is going to have a somewhat invasive neuter surgery because he didn't develop correctly. RIP baby - 9/15/2004. I also have 3 other dogs, 2 other cats, a bird, and a cow I saved from the slaughter house, who lives with my mother. Most of my pet-related expenses center around feeding them and providing veterinary care (until I graduate).I have never asked for any type of money before, but if anyone would be willing to give me any funds, I'd greatly appreciate it. I can assure that once I graduate, I'll be willing to do a lot of free veterinary work, such as feral cat spay/neuter, etc. I am also interested in going to Puerto Rico to help them with their stray animal program.
