Crispy Ambulance, Mahogany
Price: ADV $10.00 | DOS $12.00 Crispy Ambulance are at the same time both minor note, cult band and an art/prog rock icon who inhabit an enormous and uniquely individual sonic mood-scape. The Joy Division influence is undeniable only insofar as Crispy Ambulance too are haunting, aggressive, and transcend both time and trend in similar fashion. Crispy Ambulance have always confounded the listener with a sound that is at once post punk and Pink Floyd. It is a sound and a delivery so intensely moody, and so powerful, one can liken it to a rich chocolate cake served with a double espresso. You can't have them all the time, or too late at night, not if you want to avoid intense dreams and an altered state of consciousness; but sometimes there's absolutely nothing better. Sometimes no other sensory pleasure is so exciting or so satisfying and you wish it were good for you so you could have it three times a day.

Pop and Jazz Listings * CRISPY AMBULANCE, MAHOGANY, the Knitting Factory, 74 Leonard Street, TriBeCa, (212) 219-3006. The now reunited Crispy Ambulance made bleak English post-punk rock for the Factory label in the 1980's. Mahogany, from Brooklyn, layers noise and ambiguity atop the minimalistic pop mechanisms and cool-headed female vocals of Stereolab, creatively smudging the grids. Sunday night at 8:30; tickets are $10 in advance, $12 on Sunday (Jon Pareles). Courtney And Alan Robert's Autograph On Courtney's Arm
Philadelphia City Paper musicpicks Crispy Ambulance Mancs for the Memories Dept. OK, so this isn't Manchester and it isn't 1982, but you'd never know it from hanging around Philadelphia's rock clubs. First The Chameleons grace us with their presence, thrilling the crowd as if they're more determined to be kids now than the first time around, and now Crispy Ambulance have made their way to our shores. Less poppy than some of their Mancunian counterparts, the Crispies weathered their share of Joy Division comparisons in their day, but in fact they've more in common with Magazine, the band Buzzcock Howard Devoto put together when he got tired of punk. Cripsy Ambulance's ominous, obsessively repetitive music develops an austere beauty over time, although it's possible to accuse them of taking themselves too seriously as well. At least they haven't come back empty-handed: Scissorgun (Darla), produced by 808 State's Graham Massey, is their first studio album in 20 years, and only their second ever. If they're lightening up, it's only a little -- but then if you'd taken this long to produce a follow-up, you'd probably be grumpy too. Thu., Nov. 7, 9 p.m., with Photon Band and Mahogany, The Khyber, 56 S. Second St., 215-238-5888
