About the Author.

The drum corps experience of Mr. Larry Girard, Jr. started years before he first picked up a
bugle. His father was the founder and director of the Enfield, CT, Sabers, a junior corps which
competed in the Yankee Circuit and later the Greater New York Circuit. Girard started
marching officially at the ripe old age of 7, starting on the bugle with the Sabers' feeder corps.
At the age of 10, he grew bored with the bugle and changed to snare drum for a couple of years.

Girard joined the competitive corps at age 12 and played solo soprano until aging out at 21.
After he stopped marching with the corps he became the brass arranger/instructor, a position he
held until the corps folded in 1975. For years, Larry was not involved with the drum corps scene
other than watching the PBS broadcast of DCI finals every year. Then he got online and found
RAMD. Through the internet, he has been able to get re-acquainted with drum corps. He is
presently a member of the NY Skyliners Alumni drum and bugle corps.

When his son was old enough to join Cub Scouts, Larry started to become involved in Scouting.
He has been a pack committee chairman, served on a troop committee and has been very active
in the Metacomet District of the Connecticut Rivers Council, BSA, serving on staff for various
district and council training programs, Cub Scout and Boy Scout activities and currently holds
the position of Assistant District Commissioner. Girard was honored as Commissioner of the
Year in 1996 and received the District Award of Merit in 1997. His wife is currently
Scoutmaster of his son's Boy Scout Troop and his son is currently a Life Scout and within sight
of Eagle.

During the day, Larry is the President of Canal Bank Associates, a full line supplier of airfield
lighting equipment.
