About the Author:

Stuart E. Rice began marching in 1977 and instructing marching in 1984.  At the age of 16 he
was selected to solo with the Utah Symphony in the 1981 "Salute to Youth" program, and he has
held principal and co-principal positions with numerous ensembles including the Juilliard
Philharmonia, America's Youth in Concert, and the University of Utah Wind Symphony.  He was
honored as a "Promising Young Artist" in 1982 by the National Foundation for Advancement in
the Arts, and "Best Brass Ensemble" with the Blue Devils Drum and Bugle Corps at the DCI
World Championships in 1983.

Among the visual works of Mr. Rice are renderings of Bukvitch's "In Memoriam Dresden,"
premiered by the University of Utah Wind Symphony in 1988, and Messiaen's "...And I Await
the Resurrection of the Dead," premiered by the University of Northern Colorado Wind
Symphony in 1989. He was a presenter at the University of Rochester Visual and Cultural
Studies Conference in 1995, and the RAMD Virtual Symposium: Drum Corps Reconsidered in
the same year, for which he served as Steering Committee Chair.  Mr. Rice was a performance
major at the Juilliard School of Music in New York, attending on scholarship, after which he
transferred to the University of Utah where he recieved a Bachelor of Music Degree with
emphasis in Instrumental Education in 1996.  He is a librarian of eight years experience, and a
music teacher in Duchesne, Utah.  He currently teaches marching, songwriting, and
instrumental, vocal and general music for grades kindergarten through twelfth.
