THE AUTHOR.

In 1983 Stuart E. Rice accepted a scholarship to the Juilliard School of Music, where he
attended in 1983.  He later earned a Bachelor of Music Degree with emphasis in secondary
instrumental education.  Rice has been invited to address conferences at the University of
Rochester, New York (1995) and University of California, Davis (1998) on the subject of
marching.

A member of the 1983 DCI World Championship "Best Brass Ensemble," Stuart was also an
Editorial writer for Drum Corps World, 1996-1998.  He served as Editor of the electronic
newsletter "Stuart Rice On Marching,"circulating 1997 to 1999.  Rice instructed and
choreographed marching at several levels from 1984-1997 and is a former Director of Bands at
elementary, junior high, and high school levels.  His marching band was perhaps the first to
march a complete halftime show without using drill charts or drawings.
