Mardi Gras,
which means "Fat Tuesday" in French,
is the last Tuesday before Lent. In many places around the world, but especially
in New Orleans, Louisiana.
Mardi Gras begins on King's Day, or the Feast of the Epiphany, which is January
6. This is also the last day of Christmas, or the Twelfth Night. In New Orleans,
the festivities continue until
Mardi Gras day.
The colors of Mardi Gras are purple, green and gold. Each color has a special
meaning: |
|
In New Orleans, Mardi Gras is celebrated with private Masked Balls (fancy
dances), parades and
parties. At
the parades, members of the
Krewes," or
Carnival organizations, ride on the
floats in
costumes and toss
throws (beads,
cups, doubloons (fake coins), candy, and other trinkets) to the crowd. Each
Krewe selects a King and Queen each year.
The traditional food of Mardi Gras is the
King Cake.
It's a doughnut-shaped cake (it tastes sort of like coffeecake) with icing
and colored sugar on top. A small baby (representing the baby Jesus) is hidden
inside the cake. Whoever finds the baby buys the next King Cake or throws
the next party.
