SCENES FROM GUANAJUATO, MEXICO (set 2)
Monument to ¨El Pipila¨ overlooking Guanajuato. Erected in honor of independence war hero Juan Jose de los Reyes Martinez (nicknamed ¨Pipila¨). He burned down the door of the Alhondiga de Granaditas (used as a fort by the Spanish loyalists), allowing the insurgent army to defeat the Spanish.
Teatro Juarez. Construction of this theater began in 1873. One of the most beautiful theaters in Mexico, the facade is Dorio-Roman, the lobby is French and the interior is Moorish in style.
A view from the Union Gardin (Jardin Union). You see the Teatro Juarez, the ¨Funicular¨ (little red tram that runs up to the statue of ¨El Pipila¨) and the Templo San Diego.
This plaza (Plazuela de San Rogue) is one of my favorite hang outs. This picture, unfortunately, doesn´t really do justice to the view.
Finally, a picture of the tunnels. These circle the city and also run under its center. There are entrances and exits for both cars and pedestrians through out the city.
