Grade 1 |
Happy Fall! Keep practicing the sight word and short vowel flashcards. It is so important to practice all word cards every night. The children need constant repetition in order to help these skills become automatic. The Starfall website is great for practicing the skills that we are learning in class. Week of October 12-16: Spelling: Unit 15-Useful Words- Test: Friday, October 16 We are skipping Unit 14 for now, but we will pick it up later. Make sure you study the words every night. Don't forget to study the bonus words. We are having fun in class reviewing the words with games and activities. Ask your child about "water pens" and "bounce ball review!" Phonics: We will be finishing Unit 1 this week (Consonants). Since we are beginning short vowel sounds in Spelling, we will skip to the short a pages in the Phonics workbook in addition to the consonant pages that we will be finishing. We were a little behind last week, so we are still working on these pages. Writing: We will begin a writing workshop in which the children will take part in lessons that provide clear, structured guidelines to help them to clarify their ideas, maintain focus, and connect their thoughts to form related words and sentences. We didn't get to this last week, but we will this week. Each skill is introduced at the oral level so that students can more easily formulate their ideas before they write anything on paper. We will be using graphic organizers, picture prompts, and sentence starters to help the children express their thoughts verbally and in writing. October Book Project: Our students complete monthly book projects as a part of the Book It program. Our October goal is to read 5 Halloween books and complete a story map. The creative component is to make a puppet representing the main character of the book. Happy reading! When book projects are sent home, you will be asked to sign and return the paper. This is so that I know that you know that there is a book project. I will check it off and send it back home. |
