Contemporary Christian singer Stacie Orrico signed to
Forefront Records at age 14, after winning the grand prize
in the vocalist competition at the Estes Park Christian
Artist Seminar two years earlier. Her debut album for the
label, 2000's Genuine, offered a wholesome alternative to
sexed-up teen tarts like Christina and Britney, with urban-pop
tunes (three written or co-written by Orrico) that lyrically
explored such topics as peer pressure, anorexia, and, of course,
Orrico's religious faith. The album was a leftfield hit, landing
at number one on the Billboard Heatseekers chart and eventually
going gold despite very little mainstream media exposure.
Destiny's Child couldn't help but notice, and invited Orrico to
join them as the opening act on their 2001 U.S. tour.
Now 16 years old and signed to a major secular label,
Virgin Records, Orrico has returned with a self-titled
sophomore album that features the talents of producers
Dallas Austin (Pink, TLC) and Matt Serletic (Matchbox Twenty, Santana)
as well as megahit songwriter Diane Warren. On the new disc, Orrico
once again tackles subject matter of interest to confused adolescents,
such as the first single, "Stuck," which is about being trapped in an
unhappy relationship with an unappreciative boyfriend. So far the song
is being well-received in the non-Christian worlds of pop radio and
MTV's TRL, proving that Orrico's fresh-faced PG image and morally
responsible lyrics have universal appeal.
