Moon, Mars, and Making Moneyby Richard Perry London - Oct 29, 2001 Recent articles on SpaceDaily such as "Where's my flying car?" and "The Lure of Mars" reveal a common trait between two identifiable camps of the 'Children of Apollo'. They want something. Unlike the 1960's generation who at the removal of various social barriers went out and created, the 'Children of Apollo' generation (born in the late 1950's and 1960's) have been used to getting what they say they want. Brought up on a high energy diet of post-Apollo NASA PR, better SF films, television and literature, their constant wanting had been fulfilled. Until now. With the turn of the century, that Apollo generation finds itself in a mid-life crisis. They are looking around for the toys that they had been promised, and are asking where they are. The two identifiable camps in this generation are those looking for a return to the Moon on a commercial basis, and those seeking a government-sponsored human exploration of Mars. A common driver in these communities is a small number of folk who have realised that if they want these things, then they have to go out and create them. The reason for the non-existence of the moon bases and flying cars, and all the other complaints of this generation is largely due to that generation being a little late in taking on the responsibility to make those things happen.
Back To The Moon Work done by The Moon Society in recent years has identified the probable cost of a commercial manned return mission as being well under $2billion. This is supported by reasonably detailed programme and project breakdown structures for products and costs and which have been prepared by experts with substanital experience in this area. Being a commercial objective however, a major failing in our current understanding of commercial lunar exploration is quite simply how to make it pay. We know the costs, but cannot yet identify the revenue streams. As a result, the manned return to the Moon is likely to be preceded by a commercial unmanned return. There is already a small gaggle of private companies working on commercial business plans and spacecraft to do just that. But even with sound business plans and the technical expertise to perform these missions, there remains an level of investor shyness about undertaking the investment risk.
Onward To Mars Although hardly ever stated to date, these calls are for government money to be spent exploring other planets. NASA itself has for years claimed no further interest in the Moon, without declaring any interest in places other than LEO (Low Earth Orbit). The reason is simple - government agencies like NASA are, by definition, driven by political agendas. NASA does what it is told to do, and in short, has suffered from a lack of firm direction from the voters. The main fallout for the Mars supporters is that the government investment stream is currently tied up in the wrong programme - namely the International Space Station. They have a significantly better case to present (in cost terms) in terms of the exploration of Mars, and their task is therefore simple - release the investment capital by political pursuasion. That means getting involved in steering what NASA is directed to do, using your rights, taking an interest. Not sitting back expecting it to all be done for you.
Requirements of Reality To return to the Moon commercially, the business processes required to make an attractive return on investment need to be defined. At present, only half the work appears to have been achieved in respect of this, although the unmanned commercial sector is looking reasonably healthy so long as it can get investment in the next year or two. For a mission to Mars, the money needs to be redirected. It exists aplenty, but is directed at another effort. In the US, this means being able to detach spending commitments from the ISS as soon as possible. There are already some signs of NASA interest in privatising the operation of the station upon completion, but semi-privatisation to build on the clear market for space tourism could help speed that process, while removing uncertainty and fear about the commercial risk. At the moment, all we know for sure is that NASA does not want to go back to the Moon. Equally, it is not screaming out for funding to go to Mars. It just sits there trying to defend the investment in the ISS - a sad state of affairs. Those in favour of a manned mission to Mars can help speed that objective in several ways. Firstly, by getting in a position to influence NASA policy. Since NASA is a politically-driven organisation, this is entirely possible within a timescale of choice. Secondly, to speed the re-direction of government investment away from LEO and towards Mars, they need to help NASA unwind from the ISS investment commitments. The quickest way to do this may well be to push for semi-privatisation - with tourist habitation modules and the allocation of more tourism flights. As such, the Mars supporters need to be both politically and commercially aware to cajole the voting public and the rest of the political apparatus in this direction.
Where First? NASA does not want to go back to the Moon and commercial moonbase plans would be destroyed by such action. The commercial space companies could not possibly contemplate going to Mars when they cannot yet see a closing of the business process loop for lunar commercialisation. That said, there is potentially considerable crossover between lunar and Mars missions, and between government and private enterprise. Going to Mars and unwinding from nationalized budgetary interest in the ISS could be a stimulant to space tourism and hence lunar settlement.
The Government's Role In the context of the space frontier, the government also has a role to play. The ISS is clearly an overspend item with little return according to the original plan. Herein lies an opportunity to promote space tourism, and allow for the expansion of that using the ISS as a natural LEO base. In turn, a viable tourist destination can help private investment in man rated launchers, and hence ease NASA requirements to produce a successor to the Space Shuttle. Given a clear remit without unfair government sponsored competition, the private sector can deliver better and much lower cost of ownership launch facilities if allowed to. All of this LEO activity helps space commercialisation through getting the human experience of spaceflight closer to the aspirations of taxpayers. In turn, they will support commercialisation efforts in LEO and those directed at the Moon. Freed from these more local commitments, NASA can undertake the manned exploration of bodies beyond the Earth Moon system while taking advantage of increasing LEO and Lunar commercial facilities as excellent-value training facilities. The tax payer will in fact come to expect this, and there is no better organization best placed to explore (as yet) non-commercially viable frontiers than NASA.
Summary No-one is asking NASA to go to the Moon, and in fact the success of the commercial space sector requires that Governments play a hands off role. Both planetary camps have considerable work to do to achieve their aims. The lunar commercialisation people have yet to present a completely closed economic model for a lunar base. In addition, whilst a viable unmanned commercial lunar exploration market is ready to give birth, the investment monies are still intangible at this time. The campaigners for Mars exploration need to recognise that their roadblocks are entirely political. However, by learning some commercial tricks, they may be able to speed the road towards their goals and win over some considerable political and taxpayer support in the bargain. "War of the Worlds" - radio news broadcast by New York City studio of the Columbia Broadcasting System's Mercury Theater, that illegal aliens were invading Grover's Mill and planet Earth (Halloween eve 1938) - In his famous study of the Martian panic, Princeton University psychologist Hadley Cantril discusses the extreme variability of eyewitness descriptions of the "invasion" (Cantril, H. 1947. The Invasion From Mars: A Study in the Psychology of Panic. Princeton, New Jersey: Princeton University Press. Originally published in 1940). These
examples have been usually overlooked in subsequent popular and scholarly discussions
of the panic. One person became convinced that they could smell the poison gas and feel
the heat rays as described on the radio, while another became emotionally distraught and
felt a choking sensation from the imaginary "gas" (Cantril 1947, 94-95). During the
broadcast several residents reported observations to police "of Martians on their giant
machines poised on the Jersey Palisades" (Markush 1973, 379). After checking various
descriptions of the panic, Bulgatz (1992, 129) reported that a Boston woman said she could
actually see the fire as described on the radio; other persons told of hearing machine gun
fire or the "swish" sound of the Martians. A man even climbed atop a Manhattan building
with binoculars and described seeing "the flames of battle." Only someone with an ignorance of history would assume that similar panics could
not recur. More recent mass panics and delusions have involved the pivotal role of
the mass media (especially newspaper and television). What is not humorous is the relative ease at which a spate
of media hoaxes were perpetrated across the country in the early 1990s, prompting
the Federal Communications Commission to impose fines of up to $250,000 for
TV stations knowingly broadcasting false information. But could a repeat of the
1938 Martian panic occur? The answer is, "Yes." A widespread panic was triggered following a broadcast of the Wells play by a Santiago,
Chile, radio station on November 12, 1944. Upon hearing the broadcast, many fled into the
streets or barricaded themselves in their homes. In one province, troops and artillery were
briefly mobilized by the governor in a bid to repel the invading Martians. The broadcast was
highly realistic. It included references to such organizations as the Red Cross and used an
actor to impersonate the interior minister (Bulgatz 1992, 137).
On the night of February 12, 1949, another radio play based on The War of the Worlds
resulted in pandemonium in Quito, Ecuador, with tens of thousands of panic-stricken
residents running into the streets to escape Martian gas raids. The event made headlines
around the world including the front page of the February 14, 1949, edition of The New York
Times ("Mars Raiders Caused Quito Panic; Mob Burns Radio Plant, Kills 15"). The drama
described strange Martian creatures heading toward the city after landing and destroying
the neighboring community of Latacunga, twenty miles south of Quito. Broadcast in Spanish
on Radio Quito, the realistic program included impersonations of well-known local
politicians, journalists, vivid eyewitness descriptions, and the name of the local town of
Cotocallo. In Quito, a riot broke out and an enraged mob poured gasoline onto the building
housing the radio station that broadcast the drama, then set it alight, killing fifteen people.
The tragic sequence of events began when a regular music program was suddenly
interrupted with a news bulletin followed by reports of the invading Martians wreaking havoc
and destruction while closing in on the city. A voice resembling that of a government
minister appealed for calm so the city's defenses could be organized and citizens
evacuated in time. Next the "Mayor" arrived and made a dramatic announcement: "People of
Quito, let us defend our city. Our women and children must go out into the surrounding
heights to leave the men free for action and combat." Positioned atop the tallest building in
the city, the La Previsora tower, an announcer said he could discern a monster engulfed in
plumes of fire and smoke advancing on Quito from the north. It was at that point, according
to a New York Times reporter, that citizens "began fleeing from their homes and running
through the streets. Many were clad only in night clothing."
Other radio adaptations of The War of the Worlds have had less dramatic consequences,
but resulted in some frightened listeners in the vicinity of Providence, Rhode Island, on the
night of October 31, 1974, and in northern Portugal in 1988. Since 1938, the world's rapidly expanding population has grown increasing reliant
on the mass media, and people generally expect the news to contain immediate,
accurate information on nearly every facet of their lives. By most projections, the
twenty-first century will bring an even greater dependence on information and mass
media. While it may be true that you cannot fool all of the people all of the time, as
the "War of the Worlds" panics and other mass scares attest to, you need only fool
a relatively small portion of people for a short period to create large-scale
disruptions to society. That is the lesson we can glean from the reaction to the 1938
broadcast. It can and will happen again. Only the mediums and forms will change
as new technologies are developed and old delusional themes fade away while new
ones come into vogue.

SpaceDaily.com Third Mars Simulation Base Team Arrives At Desert Station
The third crew rotation of the Mars Desert Research Station has begun. The rotation, which started March 10, will run through March 24. During this time, the crew will continue the MDRS's program of sustained field exploration of the Utah desert while operating under many of the same constraints that a human crew would in an expedition to Mars. The purpose of this work is to learn how to explore on the Red Planet. The commander of the third rotation is Dr. Bjoern Grieger, of the Max Planck Institute for Aeronomy, Katlenburg-Lindau. Dr. Grieger has a background in physics, astronomy, and paleoclimatology and has had cosmonaut training in Star City. Nell Beadle, a professional field geologist with Fugro Seafloor Surveys, Seattle, Washington, will serve as chief geologist for the crew. Other crew embers include Tiffany Vora of the Department of Molecular Biology of Princeton University, Jon Dory an engineer with Spacehab Inc. at NASA Johnson Space center, Erik Carlstrom a geologist who is president of the Oregon Mars Society, Stacy Sklar, a geologist with Northern Arizona University, and Sybil Sharvelle, an engineer with the university of Colorado at Boulder. Grieger, Beadle, Vora, Carlstrom, and Dory will all serve the full two-week crew rotation. Sklar and Sharvelle will share a crew slot, with Sklar serving March 10-17 and Sharvelle serving March 17-24. Rotation 3 is the first MDRS crew to be composed of equal numbers of men and women and is the first to be commanded by someone who is not an American national.
4th and 5th Crews Selected Rotation 4, which will run March 24-April 7, will be commanded by Dr. Judith LaPierre. Dr. LaPierre is a professor of psychology at the University of Quebec in Hull. She has participated in space human factors simulation work in Russia in conjunction with the Russian and Canadian Space Agencies. She is both the first woman to command the MDRS and the first French Canadian. Other members of the rotation 4 crew include Shannon Rupert, a professor of biology with the Department of Physical Sciences at Miracosta College near San Diego, Andrew Hoppin a space entrepreneur from New York with a degree in geology from Brown University, Joel McKinnon, a Bay Area information sciences professional with a background in geology, Jennifer Knowles, a mission operations engineer at NASA Johnson Space Center, Alexander Kazerooni, a biomedical researcher working with Lockheed Martin and NASA JSC on EVA issues, and Matt Lowry a physics teacher and Mars Society leader from Chicago. LaPierre, Rupert, McKinnon, Hoppin, and Knowles will all serve the full 2-week rotation. Lowry and Kazerooni will split their crew slot, with Lowry serving the first week and Kazerooni the second. The fifth MDRS crew rotation will run from April 7 to 21 and be commanded by Dr. Bill Clancey of the NASA Ames Research Center. Dr. Clancey is a professional space exploration human factors researcher who has taken part in Mars Society and NASA Haughton Mars Project joint expeditions to the Arctic in 1999 and 2000, and who was a member of the crew of the Mars Society's Flashline Mars Arctic Research Station during the summer of 2001. Also participating in the 5th crew rotation is Dr. Vladimir Pletser. Pletser, a Belgian national, is a geophysicist and astronaut trainee working with the European Space Agency in Noordwijk, Holland. Like Clancey, Pletser was a member of the crew of the Flashline Mars Arctic Research Station during the summer of 2001. Other members of the rotation 5 crew include Dr. Nancy Wood, Senior Scientist at the Department of Microbiology-Immunology at Northwestern University Medical School in Chicago, Jan Osburg, a doctoral candidate and lecturer at the Space Systems Institute of the University of Stuttgart, Andrea Fori, an aerospace engineer and planetary geologist with Lockheed Martin in San Jose, and David Real a freelance journalist who has written extensively for the Dallas morning news and other publications. The fifth crew rotation will be followed by a 6th which will run from April 21 to May 4. After may 4, the MDRS will cease simulation operations for the summer, during which time Mars Society simulation research will continue at the Flashline Mars Arctic Research Station on Devon Island and the MDRS will be used for public outreach and educational activities. The MDRS will then resume operations in October for its second field season which will run until May 2003. The crews of the Mars Desert Research Station are all volunteers who serve without any pay from the Mars Society. The current crews have been selected from a pool of over 400 applicants who responded to the Mars Society's open call for volunteers issued in October of 2001. Applications from new volunteers are always welcome. A complete report on the activities and future plans for the Mars Desert and Flashline Mars Arctic Research Stations will be given at 5th International Mars Society Convention, which will be held August 8-11 at the University of Colorado at Boulder. Mars Simulation Base Completes Second Crew RotationHanksville - Mar 6, 2002 The tour of duty for the second crew of the Mars Desert Research Station (MDRS) is coming to a close, formally ending on March 7th, 2002. The past two weeks of activities has marked an exciting, stimulating, and at times challenging environment for everyone here. When "Meaning" Costs $50 Billion by Michael Martin-Smith Editorial - December 13, 1998 - It seems timely to stand back, and look at the International Space Station's significance. For, like the Great Pyramids and Cathedrals of previous ages, this project is one of Mankind's most significant constructions. There has been much debate about the value of the International Space Station. But with construction, after 15 years of political planning now finally underway, it is likely to proceed, with or without delays; calls for its cancellation are probably unrealistic. To establish its value, rather than merely its price, consider that in pure science, it is probably not worth the $50 Billion plus it will take to complete the current design. Astronomy/astrophysics is best done from unmanned platforms. However, the science results of Apollo took many years to become clear, and the same probably holds true for the space station. Biomedical sciences, crystal growth, and the processing of pharmaceuticals, semiconductors and the like were promised some years ago, but terrestrial manufacturing processes have improved, and the question of a "factory" that costs $50 billion to build remains unclear. However, we know that the human future depends on our expansion into the wider Cosmos. Asteroid Impacts, Volcanic Traps formation, emerging virus epidemics, and Ice Ages put this beyond dispute - for reasons of survival, let alone further development as a Mindful species. Thus very large engineering projects beyond Earth's space will become mandatory. Therefore, human societies must increasingly learn to work in close collaboration over long frames if an inter-planetary industrial base is to be assembled. One of the results of Apollo was that, for the first time, thousands of dispersed contractors, had to manufacture machine parts to a deadline, and to hitherto unheard of levels of precision. This must now be extended over some 15-20 years, between 16 nations, on four continents, for components which need to match perfectly, before assembly in orbit. This is a quantum leap in international longterm industrial and engineering, and will increasingly bind nations together where it counts - economically. The larger projects which are essential for the human future - solar power stations, habitats/resorts, Extraterrestrial mining bases, will all be more complex than the ISS - just as the ISS is more complex than what has gone before. Managing 45 construction flights, and assembling all the cargoes into a functioning unit will put astronautics on a very steep learning curve; the techniques that have been developed to design, build and eventually operate the space station will lead to the critical skills for building a space-faring civilization. The ISS will be an incentive to develop cheaper transport systems; since, once in place, most of the annual cost will be logistical. A 10-fold reduction in launch costs will facilitate processes now considered uneconomic on the ISS. Opening up parts of the operational ISS to commerce will generate unforeseen, imaginative, and high-value revenue streams. Apollo employed nearly 2 million people, and generated seven dollars for everyone that went up into Space. The Space Station is a larger and far more longterm project. To conclude; the main goal of the International Space Station is to develop our capacities to live, build, and work beyond Earth-space on a scale larger and longer than ever before. It is a step towards our evolutionary Cosmic Destiny - the alternative being decay and extinction. The Joint Chiefs of Staff have considered the attatched memorandum for the chief of Operations, Cuba Project, which responds to a request by that office for brief but precise description of pretexts which would provide justification for US military intervention in Cuba. Such a plan would enable a logical buildup of incidents to be combined with other seemingly unrelated events to camoflage the ultimate objective and create the necessary impression of Cuban rashness and irresponsibility on a large scale, directed at other countries in addition to the United States.
A series of well-coordinated incidents will be planned to take place to give genuine appearance of being done by hostile Cuban forces. We could blow up a drone (unmannded) vessel anywhere in the Cuban waters. Casualty lists in US newspapers would cause a helpful wave of national indignation. We could develop a Communist Cuba terror campaign in the Miami area, in other Flordia cities and even in Washington. The terror campaign could be pointed at Cuban refugees seeking haven in the United States. We could sink a boatload of Cubans enroute to Florida (real or simulated). We could foster attempts on lives of Cubans in the United States even to the extent of wounding in instances to be widely publicized. Exploding a few bombs in carefully chosen spots. The arrest of Cuban agents and the release of prepared documents substantiating cuban involvement. Use of MIG-type aircraft by US pilots could provide additional provocation. Harassment of civil air, attacks on surface shipping, and destruction of US military drone aircraft by MIG type planes would be useful. An F-86 properly painted would convince air passengers that they saw a Cuban MIG, especially if the pilot of the transport were to announce that fact.
Hijacking attampts against US civil air and surface craft should be encouraged.
It is possible to create an incident which would demonstrate convincingly that a Cuban
aircraft has attacked and shot down a chartered civilian airliner from the United States.
An aircraft at Eglin AFB (Florida) would be painted and numbered as an exact duplicate for a civil registered aircraft belonging to a CIA proprietary organization in the Miami area. At a designated time the duplicate would be subsituted for the actual civil aircraft and the passengers, all boarded under carefully prepared aliases. The actual registered aircraft would be converted to a drone.
Who needs pilots? Two NASA Dryden research aircraft are showing they can save fuel and reduce drag by flying like birds do - in formation. Autonomous Formation Flight (AFF) missions flown by F/A-18 aircraft have shown in about 40 research flights substantial fuel savings of up to 20 percent for the trailing aircraft, high accuracy during autopilot-controlled formation flight. The two main risks identified early in the project were the potential for a mid-air collision when the planes are flown as close as 20 feet apart at high speeds. The second risk is the possibility of overstressing the aircraft structure should the research autopilot command large deflections of the control surfaces. The control room also plays a critical role in safety by monitoring a number of factors such as the trailing aircraft's airspeed or severe oscillations. Electronics monitor the "heart beat" from all the autopilot computers 20 times a second. The Formation Flight Information System (FFIS) is an advanced GPS system capable of computing the relative distance and velocity between two moving aircraft to an accuracy of 1 foot. Dryden had many partners in the AFF research. Langley Research Center, Hampton, Va., assisted in quantifying fuel savings and emissions reductions, UCLA's Autonomous Technology Instrumentation Lab developed sensor software and prototype sensor hardware. Boeing St. Louis researchers worked on flight control computer software development. And the Formation Flight Control System autopilot box was developed by UCLA and repackaged by The Boeing Company to fly on the research F/A-18s. Behind the daunting appearance, thick clouds of smoke, flashing lights and thunderous voice of the Wizard of Oz was a person hidden by a curtain in a control room who coordinated the effects. And one of the people behind the "curtain" of the flight research control room is Mae Yook Wong, a member of Dryden's Test Information Engineers (TIE) Group within the Western Aeronautical Test Range (WATR) - photo by NASA Dryden Flight Research Center - May 31, 2001 Take off times of the drone aircraft and the actual aircraft will be scheduled to allow a rondevous. From the rondevous point the passenger-carrying aircraft will descend to minimum altitude and go directly to an auxiliary airfield at Eglin AFB where arrangements will have been made to evacuate the passengers and return the aircraft to its original status. Meanwhile the drone aircraft will continue to fly the filed flight plan. The drone will be transmitting on the international distress frequency "MAY DAY" message stating it is under attack by Cuban MIG aircraft. The transmission will be interrupted by the destruction of aircraft which will be triggered by radio signal. This will allow IACO radio stations to tell the US what has happened to the aircraft instead of the US trying to "sell" the incident.
It is possible to create an incident that will make it appear that Communist Cuban MIGs have destroyed a USAF aircraft over international waters in an unprovoked attack.
On one such flight, a pre-briefed pilot would fly Tail-end Charlie. While near the cuban island this pilot would broadcast that he had been jumped by MIGs and was going down. This pilot would then fly at extremely low altitude and land at a secure base, an Eglin auxiliary. The aircraft would be met by the proper people, quickly stored and given a new tail number. The pilot who performed the mission under an alias would resume his proper identity. The pilot and aircraft would then have disappeared.
A submarine or small craft would distribute F-101 parts, parachute, etc. The pilots retuning to Homestead would have a true story as far as they knew. Search ships and aircraft could be dispatched and parts of aircraft found. It is understood that the Department of State is also preparing suggested courses of action to develope justification for US military intervention in Cuba. |

In the early 1960s, America's top military leaders reportedly drafted plans to kill innocent people and commit acts of terrorism in U.S. cities to create public support for a war against Cuba. Code named Operation Northwoods, the plans reportedly included the possible assassination of Cuban émigrés, sinking boats of Cuban refugees on the high
seas, hijacking planes, blowing up a U.S. ship, and even orchestrating violent terrorism in U.S. cities. The plans were developed as ways to trick the American public and the international community into supporting a war to oust Cuba's then new leader, communist Fidel Castro.
America's top military brass even contemplated causing U.S. military casualties,
writing: "We could blow up a U.S. ship in Guantanamo Bay and blame Cuba," and,
"casualty lists in U.S. newspapers would cause a helpful wave of national
indignation." Details of the plans are described in Body of Secrets (Doubleday), a new book by investigative reporter James Bamford about the history of America's largest spy agency, the National Security Agency. The plans had the written approval of all of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and were presented to President Kennedy's defense secretary, Robert McNamara, in March 1962. But they apparently were rejected by the civilian leadership and have gone undisclosed for nearly 40 years. "These were Joint Chiefs of Staff documents. The reason these were held secret for so long is the Joint Chiefs never wanted to give these up because they were so embarrassing," James Bamford told ABCNEWS.com. "The whole point of a democracy is to have leaders responding to the public will, and here this is the complete reverse, the military trying to trick the American people into a war that they want but that nobody else wants."
The documents show "the Joint Chiefs of Staff drew up and approved plans for what may be the most corrupt plan ever created by the U.S. government," writes Bamford.
The Joint Chiefs even proposed using the potential death of astronaut John Glenn during the first attempt to put an American into orbit as a false pretext for war with Cuba, the documents show. Tesla's later variable nozzle design, originally intended for his vertical take off aircraft, is substituted. Tesla's later nozzle design allows for maximum efficiency, even at low power settings, without having to replace a fixed nozzle insert, as called for in Tesla's earlier experimental prototype. This nozzle has proven to perform exactly as Tesla claimed in units that have recently been built. It is particularly attractive for applications with variable steam outputs as occur with solar heated systems.
A Tesla coil is a special transformer that can take the 110 volt electricity from your house and convert it rapidly to a great deal of high-voltage, high-frequency, low-amperage power. The high-frequency output of even a small Tesla coil can light up fluorescent tubes held several feet away without any wire connections. Even a large number of spent or discarded fluorescent tubes (their burned out cathodes are irrelevant) will light up if hung near a long wire running from a Tesla coil while using less than 100 watts drawn by the coil itself when plugged into an electrical outlet! Since the Tesla coil steps up the voltage to such a high degree, the alternating oscillations achieve sufficient excitations within the tubes of gases to produce lighting at a minimal expense of original power! Fluorescent tubes can be held under high-tension wires to produce the same lighting up effect. Remember the farmer a few years ago who was caught with an adaptive transformer under a set of high tension lines that ran over his property? Through the air, he pulled down all the power he needed to run his farm without using any connecting apparatus to the lines overhead! Any electrical engineer with the proper materials can do the same thing.
Incandescent bulbs burn high resistance filaments that gobble up energy. Fluorescent tubes burn filaments (cathodes) to create an electrical flow that sets their internal phosphorus coatings aglow. Using a Tesla coil, high voltage AC can light up glass-enclosed vacuum bulbs coolly without any gases inside them at all! Any number of cold light bulbs can be lit using only one Tesla coil, and since there is nothing inside them to burn out, they can last indefinitely. It seems like a low cost form of street lighting, doesn't it?

Laws are made to be broken. Or so the National Aeronautics and Space Administration seems to think. After an almost two-year wait, the agency's Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Ala., is poised to take delivery of a machine that proponents hope will counteract the laws of gravity.
At the heart of the device is a purported effect so radical it could change the way we interact with one of nature's most fundamental forces. We're talking revolution, not evolution. A revolution in spaceships would be just one spinoff. Back here on Earth, the internal combustion engine could become an endangered species, replaced by gravity-powered cars, planes and elevators.
The dream of defying gravity has a long and ignoble history. From Icarus on, the road is littered with failed attempts to unbind our feet from the shackles of nature's most seemingly inexorable force. But the team behind the NASA project say they are basing their efforts on real science, and NASA has paid almost $600,000 to have the machine custom-built by Ohio-based Superconductive Components, Inc. (SCI), a company that specializes in high-tech ceramics and superconducting materials. Says SCI Vice President James R. Gaines Jr.: "If it works, what a hoot!" Revolutions are usually bloody affairs, and this one is no exception. Many physicists believe the whole project is a waste of time based on unsubstantiated research of dubious origin.
Gravity, they contend, is in no danger of diminution--the only thing they see at stake is NASA's credibility.
The story begins soberly enough, in the pages of the respected science journal Physica C. There, in 1992, Russian physicist Evgeny Podkletnov published the results of an experiment in which he claimed to have discovered a "gravity-shielding" effect. According to the article, Podkletnov had managed to reduce the force of gravity on a small object by up to 2%--in effect, he had reduced its weight. Now 2% may not sound like much, but to the physics community, it was like a bomb blast. The law of gravity is one of science's most sacrosanct principles; any breaching of its walls would represent a major threat to the current theoretical framework. If verified, such a finding would bag its discoverer a Nobel Prize.
But here's the rub: Podkletnov's paper was hazy on the details. He worried that his ideas would be taken by others, that he would not be given proper credit, and he refused to allow anyone into his lab to see his apparatus. Incomplete disclosure, coupled with the outlandish nature of the claim itself, left most physicists scoffing with derision. As a result, Podkletnov was thrown out of his job at the Tampere University of Technology in Finland.
Since his paper appeared a decade ago, Podkletnov says, many people have successfully replicated his results, but if so, they have yet to report them in a peer-reviewed journal. All those who have published have failed to detect any clear results. One of them is Marshall Space Flight Center researcher Ron Koczor, who spent two years investigating various aspects of Podkletnov's experiments, and eventually gave up. But Podkletnov insists the gravity-shielding effect only occurs when all the experimental conditions are precisely right. Koczor decided it was a job for the professionals, and in 1999 he persuaded NASA to commission SCI to build a facsimile of Podkletnov's original apparatus.
The details might be sketchy, but the basic idea behind the device is fairly simple. It begins with a disc, about six inches in diameter and a quarter of an inch thick, made out of a superconducting material whose recipe Podkletnov has carefully kept secret. The disc is cooled to below -233 degrees centigrade and levitated using a magnetic field. Then an electric field is applied to make the disc spin. So far, all we have is a variation on an electric motor, but Podkletnov claims that when the disc rotates at more than 5,000 revolutions per minute, an object placed above it begins to lose weight. Somehow, he says, the force of gravity is being counteracted--the trick is, you have to get the setup exactly right.
"I wish it was as simple as baking a cake," says SCI's Gaines. Even with the company's expertise it has not been easy. Indeed, the project is a year behind schedule. But Gaines says his team are almost there, and they should be handing over the device to NASA soon.
Will it work? Gaines' technicians are not gravity experts; their field is materials science. They have simply built the machine to agreed specifications. But, of course, they would be thrilled if it did work; success would ensure an enormous boost to superconducting research. Testing of the device will be NASA's responsibility, and he awaits their results with great expectation.
Personally, I am thrilled to hear my tax dollars are hard at work subverting the laws of nature. Or attempting to, at any rate. Who knows what conceptual mountains we might demolish if our imaginations aim high enough? Johannes Kepler, the founding father of modern astrophysics, saw science as a form of play--empirical data set an irrevocable boundary to this play, but within its arena the imagination must be free to roam.
This is not NASA's first attempt to look for the Podkletnov effect. Last year, Marshall Space Flight Center funded a different experiment in which a very sensitive Cavendish balance was used to try and detect a change of weight in a superconducting apparatus. Results of that study were "inconclusive."
Randall Peters, a physicist at Mercer University in Macon, Ga., was a consultant to that project--he helped to customize the balance for this unorthodox use. "My own position," Peters says, "is that I'd be greatly surprised if the effect being sought was actually found." Like most physicists, he feels confident that gravity will withstand the Podkletnov test. Nonetheless, he adds that "physics is full of surprises," and he believes that scientists need to maintain an open mind. Gaines agrees, defending NASA's willingness to go out on such a speculative limb: "The upside potential is so huge, they really couldn't afford to miss out if it is true."
NASA's interest in circumventing gravity is not theoretical. The agency is reaching for the stars. Literally. Even in the zero-gravity environment of outer space, you still need to accelerate a ship to extremely high speeds to get to the stars in any viable framework, something that cannot be done with conventional rocket technology. The Podkletnov effect suggests it may be possible to effectively reduce the mass of the ship, thereby reducing the overall energy needed for acceleration.
The authors of the July paper introduced their experimental analysis with a wistful discussion on the limitations of rocket propulsion. "Using current rocket technology," they note, "a trip to the next star would easily consume the mass-energy equivalent of a planet in order to arrive within a reasonable lifetime." Technologies like nuclear fission and fusion offer some hope, "but still will not support the 'Star Trek' vision of space exploration." In short, if we are serious about space travel, we need a quantum leap forward in propulsive power.
Investigating potential options is the task of NASA's Breakthrough Propulsion Physics Project, which funded last year's Cavendish balance experiment. Then headed by aerospace engineer Marc G. Millis, the BPP group has license to boldly go where no man has gone before--to the outermost limits of current scientific understanding. Speaking by phone from his office at the John H. Glenn Research Center in Ohio, Millis insists that "we're not asking anyone to develop a warp drive." NASA understands, he says, that this is going to take time, and he stresses that they are "interested in developments of short increments." Giant spikes of speculation are to be sheathed in favor of careful step-by-step progress.
Specifically, the BPP is seeking projects that can be feasibly achieved in two to three years. Already, the office has funded five projects that investigate anomalous physical effects. Most do not deal with gravity per se; as Millis notes, "modifying gravity" is just one possible direction from which to approach the propulsion problem. The group has also funded work on reducing the effect of inertial mass, on quantum tunneling and on the relationship between electromagnetism and space-time. Well aware of the threat to NASA's reputation, he is determined to encourage only the most clean-cut suitors, people with university affiliations and the like.
But lightness of being is a dream that transcends institutional boundaries and beyond the ivory towers of academe an unheralded army of amateurs are beavering away in their basements against the unbearable restraints of Isaac Newton's laws. Go online and the virtual ether fizzes with a thousand competing propulsion systems. James Cox, editor of AntiGravity News, lists no less than seven major classifications of anti-gravity devices, from those based on superconductivity, to those that exploit properties of gyroscopes and purported anomalies in nuclear physics or quantum mechanics. Cox himself is working on an anti-gravity backpack that he claims is nearing the patent stage. He is currently seeking funding to develop a commercially viable prototype.
When the BPP's next casting call goes out in the fall, Millis says the agency will keep an open mind. The message of history, he says, is that new insights can come from the most seemingly unlikely directions. By definition, no one can predict from whence the next revolution will arise. Occasionally Bell stirs in legitimate, real and dangerous conspiracies. Although Art Bell pretends to be serious, the mix of incredulous fantasy with fact serves to debunk all conspiracies. Bell effectively implants the idea that anyone who believes in any conspiracy is a whacked out nutcase that should be locked up in a mental institution. He is a most effective change agent operating on behalf of our enemies. The conspiracy is racist, considering Blacks, Hispanics, and Aboriginal Peoples to be inferior races of useless eaters. They believe or at least profess that the Anglo/Aryan race is the true Israel (British Israel and Christian Identity for the dupes and an Anglophile Secular Humanism for the leaders) and thus the Master race. They have convinced the so-called useless eaters that they are friends, benefactors, and protectors. In the meantime they plan to enslave these poor People under socialism or eliminate them altogether. At 8:00 PM Eastern Standard Time, on the evening of October 30, 1938, the night before All Saints Day, now generally celebrated as Halloween, an estimated six million Americans listened to the famous Orson Welles broadcast, War Of The Worlds. The broadcast described an extraterrestrial invasion from Mars. An estimated one million sheople responded with sustained credulity and fear. Thousands responded with sheer panic. The broadcast was a psychological warfare experiment conducted by The Princeton Radio Project. The Rockefeller Foundation funded the project in the fall of 1937. An Office of Radio Research was set up with Paul F. Lazarsfeld as director. Frank Stanton and Hadley Cantril were named associate directors. Cantril used a special grant from the General Education Board to study the effects of the broadcast. Cantril published the study as a book titled The Invasion From Mars - A Study In The Psychology Of Panic. It contains a complete script of the broadcast. The book is one of a series of studies sponsored by the Federal Radio Education Committee. War Of The Worlds, was broadcast by Mercury Theater on the Air, from a microphone in a New York studio of the Columbia Broadcasting System. Council on Foreign Relations member Frank Stanton was a CBS executive. Stanton would later direct Radio Free Europe. Regarding the programs realism Cantril writes, "The sheer dramatic excellence of the broadcast must not be overlooked. The unusual realism of the performance may be attributed to the fact that the early parts of the broadcast fell within the existing standards of judgment of the listeners..." A few short weeks before this broadcast, millions of listeners had kept their radios tuned for the latest news from a Europe apparently about to go to war. They had learned to expect that musical programs, dramas, broadcasts of all kinds would be cut off in a serious emergency to inform or warn an eager and anxious public. A large proportion of listeners, particularly those in the lower income and educational brackets, have grown to rely more on the radio than on the newspapers for news... On this particular night when the listener tuned to the Mercury Theater, he heard the music of "Ramon Raquello" and his orchestra coming from the "Meridian Room" in the "Park Plaza Hotel" of New York City. Soon after the first piece had begun an announcer broke in: "Ladies and gentlemen, we interrupt our program of dance music to bring you a special bulletin from the Intercontinental Radio News." ...This report brought the story of the first explosion on Mars. The music was resumed only to be followed by another break: "Ladies and gentlemen, following on the news given in our bulletin a moment ago, the Government Meteorological Bureau has requested the large observatories of the country to keep an astronomical watch..." This bulletin contains the information that a "huge flaming object, believed to be a meteorite, fell on a farm in the neighborhood of Grovers Mill, New Jersey." The swing band gets in 20 seconds more. Then the invasion continues uninterruptedly..." The last announcement comes from New York City, the Announcer says, "I'm speaking from the roof of Broadcasting Building, New York City. The bells you hear are ringing to warn the people to evacuate the city as the Martians approach. Estimated in last two hours three million people have moved out along the roads to the north Hutchison River Parkway still kept open for motor traffic. Avoid bridges to Long Island --hopelessly jammed. All communication with Jersey shore closed ten minutes ago. No more defenses. Our army wiped out -- artillery, air force, everything wiped out. This may the last broadcast. We'll stay here to the end -- People are holding service below us -- in the cathedral. (VOICES SINGING HYMN). Now I look down the harbor. The fictitious call letters can be interpreted by insiders to mean DOUBLE-CROSS [2X] TO HELL [2L]. Hadley Cantril was born in Hyrum Utah on the 16th June 1906. He graduated Dartmouth College with a B. S. in psychology in 1928. He studied in Munich and Berlin (1929-1930). He received a Ph. D. in psychology from Harvard in 1931. In 1949 Cantril received a LL.D. from Washington and Lee University. Cantril taught sociology at Dartmouth College (1931-32), and psychology at Harvard (1932-1935), and Columbia University (1935-36). In 1936 Cantril joined the Princeton psychology department. He remained a member of the department until his death in 1969. In 1950 Cantril authored a book called Tensions that Cause Wars (1950). Hadley Cantril was an active and influential member of the Council On Foreign Relations. The public believed the War Of The Worlds was an actual news broadcast thus setting the stage for the implementation of an alien threat scenario. The only problem was that the state of the art of technology at that time did not allow for a believable presentation. The development of saucer shaped wingless and tailless flying machines by the Germans during WW-II and the implementation of psychological warfare against the sheople of the world solved the problem. The announcement of the Jewish Holocaust, the proposal of a World government which would prevent future genocide or wars by the formation of the United Nations in 1945, and the announcement of sightings of "flying saucers" by Kenneth Arnold, an ex-intelligence officer, in 1947 launched the deception. The natural guilt harbored by the men of the 509th Atomic Bomb Wing after the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki made them eager conspirators in orchestrating the faked crash of an extraterrestrial craft and discovery of shaved and surgically altered monkeys near Roswell, New Mexico in 1947. With this knowledge he succeeds in reuniting (uniting in marriage) the Force (doctrine) with Princess Lea (Church) which reestablishes the Order of Jedi Knights (Congregation - full body of Adepts or Priests - sixth root race - evolved and matured mankind - God Race, Horus) producing chaos, rebellion, and the establishment of the New Dawn on the horizon (Horus Risen), the New Age, the New Atlantis, a New World Order, the socialist utopian world. The true history reveals that "King David" was never the ruler of the nation of "Israel" but conquered "Israel" as the King of "Judah". It was that war into which he sent off the husband of Bathsheba to be killed in the forefront of battle. Motion pictures, television, and extremely sophisticated mind control operations are destroying our society. How many of you realize that the majority of these children were receiving treatment (hypnosis and drugs) from mental health professionals? How many of you realize that it is these same mental health professionals who have created the "alien abduction" and "abused children" phenomenon which has surged across the nation? Have you ever asked yourself why these incidents always happen just before legislators must vote on important gun legislation? Exploration of the moon stopped because it was impossible to continue the hoax without being discovered. And of course they ran out of pre-filmed episodes. No man has ever ascended much higher than 300 miles, if that high, above the Earth's surface. At or under that altitude the astronauts are beneath the radiation of the Van Allen Belt and the Van Allen Belt shields them from the extreme radiation which permeates space. No man has ever orbited, landed on, or walked upon the moon in any publicly known space program. If man has ever truly been to the moon it has been done in secret and with a far different technology. The tremendous radiation encountered in the Van Allen Belt, solar radiation, cosmic radiation, Solar flares, temperature control, and many other problems connected with space travel prevent living organisms leaving our atmosphere with our known level of technology. Any intelligent high school student with a basic physics book can prove NASA faked the Apollo moon landings If you doubt this please explain how the astronauts walked upon the moons surface enclosed in a space suit in full sunlight absorbing a minimum of 265 degrees of heat surrounded by a vacuum... and that is not even taking into consideration any effects of cosmic radiation, Solar flares, micrometeorites, etc. NASA tells us the moon has no atmosphere and that the astronauts were surrounded by the vacuum of space. Heat is defined as the vibration or movement of molecules within matter. The faster the molecular motion the higher the temperature. The slower the molecular motion the colder the temperature. Absolute zero is that point where all molecular motion ceases. In order to have hot or cold, molecules must be present. A vacuum is a condition of nothingness where there are no molecules. Vacuums exist in degrees. Some scientists tell us that there is no such thing as an absolute vacuum. Space is the closest thing to an absolute vacuum that is known to us. There are so few molecules present in most areas of what we know as "space" that any concept of "hot" or "cold" is impossible to measure. A vacuum is a perfect insulator. That is why a "Thermos" or vacuum bottle is used to store hot or cold liquids in order to maintain the temperature for the longest time possible without re-heating or re-cooling. Radiation of all types will travel through a vacuum but will not affect the vacuum. Radiant heat from the sun travels through the vacuum of space but does not "warm" space. In fact the radiant heat of the sun has no affect whatsoever until it strikes matter. Molecular movement will increase in direct proportion to the radiant energy which is absorbed by matter. The time it takes to heat matter exposed to direct sunlight in space is determined by its color, its elemental properties, its distance from the sun, and its rate of absorption of radiant heat energy. Space is NOT hot. Space is NOT cold. Objects which are heated cannot be cooled by space. In order for an object to cool it must first be removed from direct sunlight. Objects which are in the shadow of another object will eventually cool but not because space is "cold". Space is not cold. Hot and cold do not exist in the vacuum of space. Objects cool because the laws of motion dictate that the molecules of the object will slow down due to the resistance resulting from striking other molecules until eventually all motion will stop provided the object is sheltered from the direct and/or indirect radiation of the sun and that there is no other source of heat. Since the vacuum of space is the perfect insulator objects take a very long time to cool even when removed from all sources of heat, radiated or otherwise. NASA insists the space suits the astronauts supposedly wore on the lunar surface were air conditioned. An air conditioner cannot, and will not work without a heat exchanger. A heat exchanger simply takes heat gathered in a medium such as freon from one place and transfers it to another place. This requires a medium of molecules which can absorb and transfer the heat such as an atmosphere or water. An air conditioner will not and cannot work in a vacuum. A space suit surrounded by a vacuum cannot transfer heat from the inside of the suit to any other place. The vacuum, remember, is a perfect insulator. A man would roast in his suit in such a circumstance. NASA claims the spacesuits were cooled by a water system which was piped around the body, then through a system of coils sheltered from the sun in the backpack. NASA claims that water was sprayed on the coils causing a coating of ice to form. The ice then supposedly absorbed the tremendous heat collected in the water and evaporated into space. There are two problems with this that cannot be explained away. 1) The amount of water needed to be carried by the astronauts in order to make this work for even a very small length of time in the direct 55 degrees over the boiling point of water (210 degrees F at sea level on Earth) heat of the sun could not have possibly been carried by the astronauts. 2) NASA has since claimed that they found ice in moon craters. NASA claims that ice sheltered from the direct rays of the sun will NOT evaporate destroying their own bogus "air conditioning" explanation. Remember this. Think about it the next time you go off in the morning with a "vacuum bottle" filled with hot coffee. Think about it long and hard when you sit down and pour a piping hot cup from your thermos to drink with your lunch four hours later... and then think about it again when you pour the last still very warm cup of coffee at the end of the day. The same laws of physics apply to any vehicle traveling through space. NASA claims that the spacecraft was slowly rotated causing the shadowed side to be cooled by the intense cold of space... an intense cold that DOES NOT EXIST. In fact the only thing that could have been accomplished by a rotation of the spacecraft is a more even and constant heating such as that obtained by rotating a hot dog on a spit. In reality a dish called Astronaut a la Apollo would have been served. At the very least you would not want to open the hatch upon the crafts return. NASA knows better than to claim, in addition, that a water cooling apparatus such as that which they claim cooled the astronauts suits cooled the spacecraft. No rocket could ever have been launched with the amount of water needed to work such a system for even a very short period of time. Fresh water weighs a little over 62 lbs. per cubic foot. Space and weight capacity were critical given the lift capability of the rockets used in the Apollo Space Program. No such extra water was carried by any mission whatsoever for suits or for cooling the spacecraft. On the tapes the Astronauts complained bitterly of the cold during their journey and while on the surface of the moon. They spoke of using heaters that did not give off enough heat to overcome the intense cold of space. It was imperative that NASA use this ruse because to tell the truth would TELL THE TRUTH. It is also proof of the arrogance and contempt in which the Illuminati holds the common man. What we heard is in reality indicative of an over zealous cooling system in the props used during the filming of the missions at the Atomic Energy Commissions Nevada desert test site, where it is common to see temperatures well over 100 degrees. In the glaring unfiltered direct heat of the sun the Astronauts could never have been cold at any time whatsoever in the perfect insulating vacuum of space. As proof examine the Lunar Lander on display in the Smithsonian Institute and notice the shrouded and encased cone of the rocket engine INSIDE the Lander which is attached above the rocket nozzle at the bottom center of the Lander. It is this rocket engine which supposedly provided the retro thrust upon landing on the moon and the takeoff thrust during takeoff from the moon. In the actual Lunar Lander this engine is present but in the film and pictures of the inside of the Lunar Lander that was "said" to be on the moon the engine is absent. Then examine the Lunar Lander simulator and you will see exactly where the fake footage was filmed. It would also be a good idea for you to measure the dimensions of the astronauts in their spacesuits and then measure the actual usable dimensions of the hatch that they had to use to egress and ingress the Lander. Also measure the inside dimensions of the actual Lander and you will see that the astronauts (liars) could not have possibly left or entered in their suits through that hatch. Notice the position of the hinge of the hatch and then examine the Lunar Lander training simulator and measure all the dimensions noted above taking care to note the position of the hinge on the much larger hatch and you may become "illumined"... so to speak. NASA claims that the space suits worn by the astronauts were pressurized at 5 psi over the ambient pressure (0 psi vacuum) on the moon's surface. We have examined the gloves NASA claims the astronauts wore and find they are made of pliable material containing no mechanical, hydraulic, or electrical devices which would aid the astronauts in the dexterous use of their fingers and hands while wearing the gloves. Experiments prove absolutely that such gloves are impossible to use and that the wearer cannot bend the wrist or fingers to do any dexterous work whatsoever when filled with 5 psi over ambient pressure either in a vacuum or in the earth's atmosphere. NASA actually showed film and television footage of astronauts using their hands and fingers normally during their EVAs on the so-called lunar surface. The films show clearly that there is no pressure whatsoever within the gloves... a condition that would have caused explosive decompression of the astronauts resulting in almost immediate death if they had really been surrounded by the vacuum of space. If you don't believe it try it yourself... it is a very simple experiment and does not require a rocket scientist to perform. These are just a few of over a hundred very simple and very easy to prove valid scientific reasons why NASA and the Apollo Space Program are two of the biggest lies ever foisted upon the unsuspecting and trusting People of the world. We attempted to obtain data on Solar activity and in particular Solar flares which may have been active during the Apollo Moon Missions. We found that data is available for any day of any year during which data has been collected EXCEPT the days and hours of all of the Apollo Moon shots. That data can not be obtained from any government agency including NASA, NOAA, or the Naval Observatory. This is data that is normally collected and would have been used in calculating the dates of launch, dates and times of EVAs, and extreme radiation hazard. It would have been monitored during times of extra vehicular activity (EVA) of the astronauts while on the moon... that is if any astronauts were ever on the moon. The data is not available because it would demonstrate that the so-called astronauts would have been fried crisp. They would have returned to the earth DEAD if they had actually attempted any such missions. In addition most, if not all, of the photos, films, and videotape of the Apollo Moon Missions are easily proven to be fake. Anyone with the slightest knowledge of studio photography, studio lighting, and the reality of Lunar physics can easily prove that NASA faked the visual records of the Apollo Space Program. No color film known to man, then or now, had or has the latitude to produce the excellent detail found in shadow and highlighted areas of the photographs supposedly taken on the moon. Any professional photographer can tell you that those photographs could only have been produced in a controlled environment using studio lighting and could not possibly have been produced in full sunlight in a vacuum on the moon. Some are so obviously fake that when the discrepancies are pointed out to unsuspecting viewers an audible gasp has been heard. Some have actually gone into a mild state of shock. Some People break down and cry. I have seen others become so angry that they have ripped the offending photos to shreds while screaming incoherently. |

DON ECKER contemplates his turbulent history and murky legacy. The news first broke on the Internet under the headline "Alleged Militia Member Dead, Deputy Shot. Eagar, Arizona. November 6, 2001, 12:15 PM." The report continued: "An Apache County sheriff's deputy may be paralyzed after being shot in the head by a so-called militia member, who was shot and killed by officers. The incident happened in the town of Eagar, which is located in the eastern part of the state, close to the New Mexico border. Sheriff's deputies were trying to serve an arrest warrant on William Cooper, who has reportedly been known to be hostile toward law enforcement. In order to approach the home, deputies disguised themselves as a bunch of rowdy teenagers in the back of a pick-up truck in hopes of luring Cooper out of his home and it apparently worked." "However, when Cooper realized what was happening, he reportedly pulled a gun and shot the 40-year-old deputy in the head. During the gunfight, Cooper was reportedly shot and killed. Officials say Cooper belongs to a militia movement and has published several articles in anti-establishment (publications). He also reportedly has a Web site and on it, acknowledges there is an arrest warrant for him, but writes 'Any attempt by federal government or anyone else to execute the unlawful arrest warrants will be met with armed resistance. Any person who attempts to kidnap our children will be shot upon discovery.'" Anyone exploring the 'dark side' of the conspiracy or UFO fields of the last 15 years will recognize the name of Milton William Cooper and remember a loud and angry voice on the fringes. For most of these years, I have watched Cooper's 'de-evolution'; never a pleasant person to begin with, he spiralled downwards as both his incipient paranoia and long list of enemies grew. This is my attempt to gather together some strands of his public life that might illuminate his state of mind prior to that violent death. I have argued elsewhere that, in 1969, the UFO story seemed to have ground to a halt. In December of that year, the US Air Force closed down its 'Project Bluebook', ending almost 22 years of 'investigations'. Except for several 'flaps' of sightings, UFOs and news reports were, for the most part, quiet for the next 15 years. The subject did not really pick up until, in 1986, newspapers headlined the story of a Japanese 747 airliner (Flight 1628), captained by Kenjyu Terauchi. Flying over Alaska, he and some of his aircrew observed three unidentified objects trailing the plane. Over the next months, Cooper placed more UFO-related documents on ParaNet and Compuserve, leading fellow users to believe that he had a real 'insider' knowledge of the subject. By Autumn 1988, Cooper seemed to have allied himself with Lear against the critics. At first, at least superficially, their stories seemed to support one another, but blatant differences arose, especially as Cooper frequently contradicted his own testimony. The split, when it came, was vicious and by the end of the year both men were ejected from ParaNet. Matters came to a head in July 1989 at the Mutual UFO Network (MUFON) symposium in Las Vegas. In his capacity as MUFON Director for the state of Nevada, Lear had invited William English, Bill Cooper and myself to give lectures. The evening before the event, William Moore – of MJ-12 fame – admitted to conference members that he had worked with military intelligence in the 1980s; he even confessed to passing disinformation to UFO researchers. With the symposium already in an uproar, Lear repeated his assertions that the secret government already had a treaty with the aliens and we, the people, were its victims. Then William English stepped up to claim that he was part of a UFO recovery operation in Viet Nam, where a UFO had brought down a B-52 bomber. (FT75:21-27, 76:30-35) There was much more, but the piece de la resistance was given by Cooper. In his finest moment, Cooper claimed that, as part of a Naval Briefing Team in 1972 or 1973, he was privy to ultra top-secret documents that detailed the entire US government and alien scenario. The US government, he declared, had recovered more than a dozen crashed UFOs. The US, the Russians and the aliens, he said, were working together on a secret space programme that gave the US and the Soviets access to hidden bases on the Moon and on Mars. He also claimed that at least four different types of aliens had visited Earth; and that, on the Moon, there were areas where vegetation and water existed. Even more astounding, Cooper claimed to have seen documentary evidence that elements within the US government had carried out the assassination of President Kennedy. Cooper topped this by showing a special 'washed' version of the Zapruder film that seemed to show Kennedy's driver, William Greer turning to shoot the President – a theory since disproven. (For the complete story of this theory and film, see FT121:28-31, 122:40-43). Later, in November 1989, another actor appeared in the Cooper soap opera – a young man named Bob Lazar. He was introduced by Las Vegas KLAS-TV broadcaster George Knapp, in a series of UFO specials, as a physicist who had worked at the super secret Area 51 base and at an even more super-secret site called S4. Lazar claimed that the US government had nine recovered UFOs at S4 and that his job had been to 'back engineer' the propulsion systems. Cooper had become a regular guest on a prominent radio station in Las Vegas, KVEG, where Billy Goodman hosted a nightly talk show. Lazar and his friend Gene Huff were on the show, one night, to talk about Area 51 when Bill Cooper, never shy, called in and conducted an extended conversation with Lazar. Cooper claimed to have consulted his "contacts" and declared that Lazar 'checked out'. That same month, Cooper gave a public lecture at the Hollywood High School in Hollywood, California, which demonstrated how the man's mood was changing; he began to attack once-fellow investigators in the UFO and JFK research areas. He also gained a reputation for a heavy indulgence in alcohol before and after lectures during which he was often abusive, publicly, about people who had contradicted him or exposed his many errors of fact. John Lear said that the drunk and abusive Cooper once came to his house in Las Vegas, threatening Lear because he imagined he was "being set up", but by who and for what reason Cooper could not say. In 1990, backed by the ever-popular Billy Goodman – the Art Bell of his day – Cooper gained new audiences for his exposé of the secret government cabal, the 'New World Order', who, he said, were subverting the US constitution, plotting to remove privately owned firearms, and were in league with evil aliens planning to enslave the world. His JFK theory by now had expanded to explain much; according to Cooper, "President Kennedy was ready to blow the whistle on the alien presence and the Secret Government could not let him live!" Building on a similar success, TV journalist George Knapp produced another blockbuster series on UFO topics in the spring of 1990. Hoping to scupper his ratings, a rival TV station hired private investigators to trail Knapp and his 'whistle-blowing' star Bob Lazar… and caught the latter entering a brothel (illegal within the Las Vegas city limits). Lazar was obliged to confess on camera (he claimed he was setting up a computer security system for the madam). This did not satisfy the local prosecutors – it being an election year – who filed charges against Lazar. Knapp interviewed John Lear again and Lear told him that he once caught Bill Cooper fabricating stories during a television interview. (The fabrications involved the 'OH Krill' documents – see FT121 and FT122.) Cooper, his veracity called into question publicly, was enraged and he came out swinging. He vilified Lear, Knapp, Lazar and many others, openly and on air, even saying that Lazar had been arrested for drug manufacture and prostitution in which Lear was involved. He also claimed they were both government agents, placed in UFO research to spread disinformation. Similarly, he accused William Moore, Jaime Shandera and renowned UFO researcher Stanton Friedman of being disinformation agents, claiming to have seen all their names on government documents back in the early 1970s. Fascinated by Cooper's flips and flops, I presented my investigation of his claims in UFO Magazine (1990; Vol 5, issues No 4 and 5). According to Bill Cooper, now I, too, was a government asset, and UFO Magazine was a CIA set up. UFO research in America was now a shambles and Cooper played a significant part in that decline. He was hailed as a prophet by many of the disenfranchised here in the US. He was also lauded at some UFO and conspiracy conferences in the UK. But he had burned most of his UFO bridges and by the mid-1990s had gravitated to the so-called militia movement at the furthest, most radical edge of the conspiracy fringe. He promised to tell all in his book Behold a Pale Horse. As he distanced himself from UFOs, his personality was disintegrating. While living in California, Cooper had clashed with local police who visited his home on 'domestic disturbance' calls. He moved to Arizona and began claiming that the entire UFO phenomenon was simply disinformation put out by the New World Order people (a plot trend not wasted on the X-Files writers). He became a spokesman for the ultra right-wing and began squabbling with figures in the patriot and militia movements. He broadcast a short-wave radio programme called The Hour of the Time, using it to hit back at all those who, he felt, had wronged him. He openly incited tax resistance and feuded with the US Internal Revenue Service. In October 2001, Cooper's radio show was cancelled because of "lack of funds". In 1998, the Federal government had several outstanding warrants for Cooper and his wife for tax evasion and bank fraud. On his website, Cooper began posting daily updates on the activities of federal agents as they attempted to serve the warrants. The Feds had to act cautiously as the highly-publicised debacles of Waco, Texas and Ruby Ridge, Idaho, were prominent in the minds of officials and the watching public. Cooper's Asian wife Annie and two daughters had left the United States in June 2000; Cooper claimed he sent them away for their own safety. Fearing that he too might soon be under siege, Cooper used his radio broadcasts and website to remind everyone about these tragedies, which had ended in the deaths of the Branch Davidians and Vicky Weaver and son at the hands of the FBI. He also used these platforms to reiterate his intention to use lethal force on anyone who trespassed on his property, including law enforcement officers who might "attempt to serve illegal warrants." And so, in November 2001, it came to an explosive end. Cooper spotted a man driving past his home and for some reason ran out of his house, jumped in his car and drove after the man to make him pull over. Cooper threatened him at gunpoint. It transpired that the man was a local doctor; he waited till Cooper left then contacted the police, who issued a warrant against Cooper for "aggravated assault with a deadly weapon." Apparently sensing Cooper's mental disintegration, the local authorities convinced the Federal authorities to back off to prevent a possible tragedy. However, they were also convinced that Cooper presented a real threat to the community; he was known to be heavily armed. They decided on a ruse to arrest Cooper by luring him out of his house. The plan involved deputy sheriffs in civilian clothes pretending to be teenagers on a lark in a pickup truck, driving around Cooper's home at midnight; uniformed officers would wait out of sight nearby. The plan worked; but instead of approaching the pickup truck on foot, Cooper jumped into his car and chased them. The police then identified themselves and ordered him to surrender. Instead, Cooper pulled out an automatic pistol, jumped back into his car and raced back to his house. When a police car attempted to block his way, he swerved around it and tried to run down an officer. Pulling up to his door, he jumped out, pistol in hand. Uniformed officers again ordered him to surrender. Cooper refused and began firing. Deputy Robert Marinez – a 40-year-old former Marine Corps veteran of Desert Storm and father of three children – was struck in the head. Officers returned fire, killing Cooper. At last report, Deputy Marinez was in critical condition at a Trauma Unit in Phoenix, Arizona. On 15 November, a memorial service was held for Cooper at the Jewkes Mortuary in Eagar, Arizona. As an observer of this tawdry story for the last 13 years, my fear is that Bill Cooper will be elevated by the misguided and the far-right as a martyr who fought the 'evil' Federal Government. The truth is that Cooper was simply a thuggish, armed felon resisting arrest. He shot a police officer and the rest returned fire, killing him. BULLETS BEFORE BRAINSKENN THOMAS speaks up in Bill Cooper's defense Milton William Cooper's book Behold A Pale Horse was regarded by many as the revealed word on US government involvement with flying saucers and alien invaders. Cooper presented himself as a former member of a US Naval Intelligence briefing team who had seen top secret documents from a group called 'MAJESTYTWELVE' – "No space between majesty and twelve," he insisted – that revealed plans for a joint alien-secret government to subdue the world. It did not take much for Cooper's critics to dismiss his writings as crazy, but he attracted large crowds at UFO conferences and ignited interest in conspiracy research as few others have. Cooper did not invent the idea of 'Majesty 12', 'Magic', 'Majic 12' or 'MJ12', with or without the space. The infamous secret group plays a prominent role in UFO history as related by such lecture circuit veterans as Stan Friedman and, more recently, Ryan Woods. They bring to their lectures documentation of varying levels of credibility. An 'MJ12 Special Studies' group appears in a document held by the US National Archives. Its dates line up closely with a UFO document among the papers of Eisenhower kitchen-cabinet member Lew Douglas, as documented in the book Wilhelm Reich and the Cold War by Jim Martin. Moreover, Cooper's claims of connection to the US intelligence community are not contradicted by the known historic record. His photograph appears in the yearbook for the USS Oriskany – a ship that served as part of the Western Pacific fleet in Vietnam. A shipmate recalls that Cooper was assigned to the navigation division and thus had access to tactical and strategic intelligence. Cooper was a second-class petty officer, and according to the shipmate was quiet and withdrawn, "not the typical party-hungry sailor." Of course, Cooper himself ultimately turned against his own UFO claims. "For many years I sincerely believed that an extraterrestrial threat existed," he later wrote on his website, "and that it was the most important driving force behind world events. I was wrong, and for that I most deeply and humbly apologize." By that time, he had taken on the cause of opposition to the New World Order and became identified with America's rightist militia movement, although he never abandoned his claims of having insider knowledge about MajestyTwelve. Long before he was killed by local sheriff's deputies in Eager, Arizona, Cooper had been under surveillance by the FBI. According to friends, in previous years the agency had set up shop in a house down the block from Cooper's residence to monitor 'The Hour of The Time', Cooper's shortwave broadcasts. The FBI determined that Cooper was too flaky to bother with and apparently decided to let local police take care of 'a local nuisance'. At the time of his death, several federal warrants for tax evasion were outstanding against Cooper. It was a botched police raid. Cooper had lost a leg in a motorcycle accident many years before. He was overweight and not terribly skilled with weapons. The FBI and the local police had had years to develop a more peaceful way to subdue him, if that is what they wanted. They either didn't want that or, more likely, they didn't care. In the end, Cooper was not a victim of a New World Order/federal government on the attack. William was the Petty Officer of the Watch and designated KL-47 SPECAT operator in the CINCPACFLT Command Center at Makalapa Hawaii. There he held a Top Secret, Q, SI, security clearance. William Cooper achieved the rank of First Class Petty Officer, QM1, E-6 after only 8 years of Naval service, a difficult task in any branch of the United States military.
