Introduction to HTML |

The students will learn the basic format of an HTML webpage and the basic tags used for this process. The various tools required to create the webpage will be introduced and demonstrated by the teacher. The students will demonstrate their understanding by taking a text document provided by the teacher and transforming it to an HTML webpage using a reference page. This is will lead into the development of an online résumé.
Students will learn the basic tags to create an HTML webpage. They will be able to modify text to create a Microsoft Word style document online and describe the process of creating a webpage.
Critical:
Students will understand the capabilities of HTML. Students will be able to describe the components of an HTML document. Student will demonstrate how to create a webpage and will be able to transform a text document into an online WebPage.
Important:
Students will have the ability to create a text-filled WebPage on their own with enhancements to the font style.
Desirable:
Students will be able to add creativity with the use of alignments, header size changes and colour.
Grade 12 Computer Studies (Computer Science, Applications or Programming); the lesson is written at an advanced level, but is easily adapted for general students.
Presenting this lesson as an HTML presentation allows for a variety of teaching types.
Teachers who have students with significant experience in HTML may choose to make the lesson a self-directed lesson and may go through the slide show and on to the assignment at their own pace. The larger assignment of the résumé is given at this time should they finish the assignment given with the lesson.
Students who have minimal knowledge of HTML can follow along with the detailed discussion with the classroom teacher so as to enhance their breadth of knowledge.
The age of technology is heading in the direction of the Internet. As HTML is a simple language, anyone with experience in it will be able to develop WebPage creation skills, which are desirable in any career.
The lesson is presented in a teacher-led presentation. Students will follow along on their machines via a series of WebPages. (Teachers may choose to have the WebPages on a data projector behind them for referencing the page.) Students who have significant experience may go through the series of WebPages and begin the assignment on their own.
Students should enter the room and sit at their computer terminals. Having the initial website on the board would initiate students to load the page on their computer and begin to browse the page.
Invite the students to follow the "slide show" and ask any questions they have. The slide show presentation on the "basics" may take a good 15 minutes, but it can be reduced or extended as needed.
At the end of the presentation the assignment should be given out. This handout is a document that requires the students to replicate it as an online file. This should be due at the end of the period, however, if time does not allow, have students work on this in the next session.
Students are required to complete the text-style WebPages as described above. The long-term assignment is to develop a résumé online. The intention is to start with a simple text-style résumé and build to a more creative résumé as new knowledge of HTML is discussed.
Netscape Navigator or Internet Explorer
Notepad or Microsoft Word *NOTE: Do not allow students to "save as HTML..."
When teaching this lesson, I would encourage teachers to continually remind the students of how the knowledge of HTML will help them in the real world. The "real world" assignment of creating a résumé online will make itself apparent to the students.
Teachers should also watch for frustration in students who find this difficult. As this is an introductory lesson, students may find concepts new and overwhelming.
