COURT: Hendrick County's First Murder Trial. Witness in his brothers (George) murder trial. The defense also tried to "justify" the blow which caused the death of the deceased by introducing testimony that the defendant had been summoned by the family of the deceased to protect them against "imminent danger of losing their lives and receiving some great bodily harm from the deceased." David Matlock and others testified that two days prior to the day the blow was given the deceased threatened to "drive his wife from his house (from which the said deceased had been absent for a year and had just returned to the country but not to his house) and if she would not leave he would whip her to the holler."

OBITUARY: "Sacramento Bee" Sacramento, Sacramento Co, CA
Monday 8 January 1906

Captain James T. MATLOCK, a leading member of the Tehama County bar, breathed his last at 2 o’clock yesterday morning after an illness of several months. General paralysis was the cause of death, and his sickness dates from last Summer, when his left hip, where he was wounded at the battle of Vicksburg, began to give him trouble. It was at first supposed that the old wound caused a partial paralysis, but later his whole left side was affected. He is survived by the widow and three adult children, all residents of this city: the only son, James T. Matlock, Jr., was admitted to the practice of law about a year ago. One daughter is Mrs. Nathaniel I. BOONE and the other, Miss Estelle Matlock, resides at home. All were with their father at the deathbed.

Captain Matlock was born at Danville, Ind., sixty-seven years ago, and enlisted as a youth in the regiment of Hoosier volunteers which was commanded by Colonel Benjamin Harrison, afterward President of the United States. He was promoted several times for gallantry under fire, and was a Captain when mustered out with the brevet rank of Major. He came to this county in 1874, locating in Red Bluff, where he soon attained prominence as a lawyer. In 1879 he was elected District Attorney on the Democratic ticket, and four years later he changed his politics, having been a Republican ever since. He was elected to the Assembly in 1890, representing the county in the Twenty-ninth Legislature. He has acquired a comfortable fortune in the practice of his profession. He had been a delegate to numerous political Conventions. The funeral will be held tomorrow afternoon. The Superior Court adjourned this morning until next Wednesday out of respect to the memory of deceased. Judge Ellison appointed a Committee of three to draw up memorial resolutions.
