Some members of the Matlock family in the Cropwell-Bishop community joined the Quakers. According to English history, the Quakers were subjected to unspeakable persecution, abuse, imprisonment and even death. It was to escape this treatment that William Matlock left England in 1677 and came to America. With the first settlers going to the new colony of West Jersey. Where they hoped to find freedom of religion and live in peace. (2)He came over on the ship "The Kent" (Capt George Marlow)which was sighted off Sandy Hook 14 August 1677. The ship followed along the coast to Raccoon creek where the passengers disembarked. The commissioner appointed by William Penn and others, William Matlack with them, took a small boat and went up the Delaware river to Chygoes island, this is where Burlington now stands. Almost surrounded by a creek named for an Indian Sachem who lived there. Matlack was the first to leave the boat. Matlack was a carpenter and he built or helped to build the first two houses in Burlington. He also helped build the first corn mill in West Jersey. He came to America as the servant of Daniel Wills, and after serving him for four years he bought from his master one hundred acres of land between the north and south branches of Penisaukin Creek, (where he and Mary later settled) in Chester township, Burlington Co. The purchase price of the land acquired was for his four years service. (3) Some descendants of William spell their name Matlack, some Matlock. The town in Derbyshire, England is spelled Matlock. "Genealogical and Memorial History of the State of New Jersey" by Francis Bazley Lee. Derbyshire Co, Central England; where Matlock is the administrative center.
