(2) In 1844 what was known as the Ocoee Academy was establised in the town of Benton, Polk Co, TN. The Baptists appeared to have been the dominating church of the Benton community in the earliest days of its existence. The first Baptist ministers were Jason Matlock and a Zachariah Rose.
