.1 John Matlock/MEDLOCK Sr. was born about 1638 in Cropwell Bishop, Nottingham, England and was Christened on 9 September 1638 in Cropwell Bishop, Nottingham, England. He was son of George MATLOCK and Jane HALL. He died before 1704 in New Kent County, Virginia. John married (1)Anne MOORE about 1657 in New Kent County, Virginia (not proven). Anne was born about 1640 in Muskham, Nottingham, England. She died on 23 March 1697/1698 in St Peters Parish, New Kent County, Virginia. John married (2)UNKNOWN on 27 April 1701 in St Peters Parish, New Kent County, Virginia.
REMARKS: (1)Some researchers have this John as son of William Matlack who stayed in New Jersey. But, it is know that William’s John was born 1683 and married first Hannah Horner, and married second Mary Lee. William Matlack of New Jersey was born about 1648 Christened in June 1650 in Cropwell Bishop, England. He came to America in 1677 aboard the ship “The Kent”. Now by looking at this John is older than William so there is no way that he could be son of William as some have stated. (2)In the St Peters Parish book the name of the lady he married in 1701 was left blank. However, some people seem to think it was Margaret (last name unknown). But I have saw where someone thinks it was a Kent. (3)The death dates of John Maddox and Margaret Maddox are being used for this couple. At that time the spelling MEDLOCK pronounced does not sound like MADDOX. Why would we presume that this is their death date? (4)Only one Medlock was on Rent Rolls in 1704. I would say that this is John Medlock Jr. Who did not have a son John until 1712. This would then make him John Sr. at this time
NOTE: (1) Came to America 1675. He came on “The Griffin” which left from Port of London. The Griffin had Quakers on board, about half settled in Salem Co, NJ and others went to VA. (2)It is suggested that John came over as indentured servant with a son, John. His wife remained in England for sometime... I do not know where I got this but as far as I know it has not been proven one way or other. (3)I have also seen that he married Anne Moore about 1680 in New Kent Co., VA. (Sherill de Carrico). (4)We know he was in New Kent County as early as 1689…. From Brenda 3/1/03.... Published by "The National Society of the Colonial Dames of America in the State of Virginia" Parish Record Series, No. 3.... 1689 “It is ordered by this present vestry in obedience to an order of New Kent County Court, bearing date ye 28 day of February 1689, ye date vestry doe putt their parishes into precincts & appoint a time for ye prosessioning and Remarking ye bounds of each man's land. The several persons named in Companys y't were ordered to prosession & to Remark ye bounds of each man's land: Jno Medlook”

…2 John MEDLOCK Jr. was born in Virginia. He died after 1734 in Hanover County, Virginia. His spouse is UNKNOWN.
NOTE: It is presumed that Hester WATSON was his wife. But there is no proof of this to this fact. In William Watson's will it states Hester Medlock. Did not state that she was John Medlock's wife.
