            Our Grandmother
Mrs. Charles (Margaret Elvira) Holloway Matlock was born in Madison County, Alabama, Nov. 6, 1823, and left this world for eternity, Sept. 19, 1904, being 80 years, 10 months and 13 days old. She was united in marriage to Charles Matlock, Feb. 17, 1841, to whom she was a devoted wife until the time of his death-Oct. 15, 1876. Eight years after their marriage they came to this state (1849), and settled in the northern part of Bossier Parish. Being among the first settlers to this part of the state, she could tell us (of a younger generation) many interesting  stories of life in a sparsely settled community during the early days.  The old home-stead they first settled on made their home until called beyond to unite with kindred spirits who have gone before. Yes, she has gone on to meet husband, and only sister, Mary Ann, one brother, Reuben Tillman Holloway, 2 sons, Strother (1862) and

Joseph (1901), 2 daughters, Amanda & Georgia. She leaves to mourn her death many friends, one brother, John Marshall Holloway, who has now grown feeble and is near life's end, four sons, Charles, Hartwell Marion, John Roger, and Asa Matlock. Five daughters:  Mary Jane Love, Elizabeth Rodgers, Martha Swindle, Callie Floyd, and Laura Goodwin, 58 Grandchildren, and 45 Great-Grandchildren. She was known far and near as "Grandma Matlock". She professed religion
and joined the Methodist Church when quite young and ever lived a consistant member of the same. She was charitable and kind. Her home was a shelter for the weary and benighted traveler and a stopping place for God's Ministers of the gospel, she loved God's people and loved their
company. We who are left behind, let us not weep and mourn as though we have no hope; but rather, rejoice that we have another jewel in Heaven, and may we use it as a means of grace to draw us nearer to God, and in the future strive to be more loyal to Him who givith and who taketh away.

After an extended period of ill health and intense suffering, Mr. John Roger Matlock departed his earthly life to begin a life of perfect rest and joy, away from sorrow and suffering. Mr. Matlock was born in Mississippi, Nov. 14, 1845, and died at the home of his sister in Plain Dealing, May 30, 1917, thus his age was 71 years. His parents removed from Mississippi to

Bossier Parish  in 1849, and during nearly all of the intervening years he resided near Red Land. He had a wide acquaintance throughout this section, and many will cherish a lasting memory of his deeds of kindness and his wise counsels. Though his absence is keenly  felt, yet the memory of his sweet  and comforting life will be left as a monument and solace in all hearts. Five sons: Charles, John Jr., Grover, Straud, and Robert, Four daughters: Margaret, Ida, Arminta, & Alice, cherish the memory of their tender, loving father, while his widow is left to tread the way of life without his sweet companionable spirit at her side. Also he is missed by
his large circle of 40 living Grandchildren, 2 Great Grandchildren, 3 brothers: Hartwell Marion, Asa, & Charles and 3 sisters: Martha, Callie & Laura, who mourn their loss. But we sorrow not as "those who have no hope" for, verily, we remember the words of Him who said, "Blessed are they that die in the Lord."  We feel his assuring promise to return to earth again and receive us unto Himself. We know that in the realms of eternal life and joy we shall meet all who are hopeful and trustful in the Lord. "And there shall be no tears there, neither sorrow nor death." Dear bereaved ones, we point you to Him who can wipe away all tears. "Blessed are they that mourn, for they shall be comforted." "Farewell, Father, Farewell Father; Thou hast loved long and well; How we miss thee, none can tell,God is with thee; All is well.

Bossier Banner ~ 19 Dec. 1901

Joseph S. Matlock, died at his home in Beulah, Bienville Parish, on Sunday, November 24, 1901, aged 42 years, 5 months, and 3 days. He was a son of Mr. & Mrs. Charles L Matlock,  and was born in Bossier Parish June 21, 1859, and in 1879 was married to Miss Nannie Shaw. He leaves a wife and six children, a mother, four brothers and five sisters and many relatives and friends to mourn his departure. He was converted and joined the Methodist Church in 1868 and in 1896 he joined the Baptist Church in which he lived a faithful and consistent Christian to the end. Joe was kind to all and endured his suffering with much patience. He is among the shining angels; he has joined the loved ones who have gone before, and they are singing around the great white throne. Weep not, it is hard to give him up who was so dear to us, but knowing as we do that his trials on earth are at an end we should submit to the will of Him who doeth all things for the best. A precious one from earth is taken in, a voice that was loved is stilled, a place is vacant in his home that can never be filled. Farewell, dear brother, thy work is done, the battle fought, the victory won. Your days here on earth were few, and full of pain, but we count our loss your richest gain.
