BIO: George was the fourth son in a row born to his parents in Arkansas, not counting his two oldest brothers, both born in Tennessee. George was a year old when he joined the four to six month trip by wagon train heading for California with his parents. "The oxen trip was even slower than usual because of numerous sand storms and hail storms along the trail during 1853." per Stanislaus County Autobiography. Being the youngest son, George helped his Dad and brothers with the numerous farm-hand duties on his father's vast dry-farming grain ranches in San Joaquin and Stanislaus Counties. In 1870, when 18 years old, George still lived at home in "The Gardenhire Farm House" with two older brothers, Archie and James, and his younger sister, Mary, per the 1870 San Joaquin County Census. The Gardenhire farm was just across the county line from the near by German Town of Clyde, formed in 1871 by German-American farming settlers in the area. George D. was not listed in his father's probate will of July 1883. He was the only living son not listed, thus his county of residence was not given during 1883. On 15 May 1913, George was listed as a serviving brother in the Oakdale Graphic Newspaper obituary of Arichibald Yell Gardenhire. George lived in California 64 years and died of Cerebral Apoplexy at 5:30 p.m., 24 March 1916, at the Butte County Infirmary at age sixty-five years. His death certificate has his last place of residence as Sterling, a small town about fifteen miles NE of Chico, California George and his wife Annie share a greenish-blue rock labled with their names and year of death only. This rock shaped headstone is beside a young evergreen pine tree planted about 1975. This couple share the rock monument with their two infants, at the large Chico Cemetery in the center of this growing college town in northern Carlifornia. The cemetery plot book shows infant to be Etta L. Gardenhire, no date of burial. Etta is buried at the end of her dad's long grave. Catherine's name was not shown on the headstone either, but this young baby girl was placed with her mother in 1892. Their son John Dallas is also buried at Chico Cemetery. This wife might have remarried as she is not buried beside him, nor in the cemetery, per Cemetery Record Book, September 1984. The graves of George and Annie are both extra long which gave room for 6 month old Catherine to be placed in the same grave as her mother. Thus these two side by side graves are the final resting place of two infants also. Their married son John was not placed beside his parents yet many Gardenhire Cousins also share this cemetery. This flat green grass Cemetery is now totally surrounded by the large flat town of Chico. This town has a creek running through it watering the numerous trees and ferns through out this long twisting creek.
