William is my Gr.gr.gr.gr.grandfather. I descend thru his daughter Mary. Much of this has been proven. But, previous generations are NOT. On information that I have found I will type an abstract or list where it can be found. If you find errors please let me know.... Wanda
...3 William MATLOCK Sr. was born about 1750 to 1753 in Halifax County, Virginia and died September 1829 in Morgan County, Indiana. He was son of Willaim MATLOCK/MEDLOCK and second wife Elizabeth UNKNOWN. He married Sarah 'Sally' UNKNOWN who died in Indiana about 1830.
It is not known the exact date that William came to Tennessee. There is a William on tax list for 1792 and 1794 in Washington County, Tennessee but it is not known if this is William Sr. (1753) or if it is David Matlock’s William (1762). Because of a depostion made by Jesse Matlock I know that my William was there before coming to Knox County. He states that his sister Mary married in Washington County, Tennessee before 1798. Records show that William was in the area, of what is now Roane County, before the year 1800. Jason and Moore Matlock came to Roane County by 1805 from Sullivan, or Jefferson County, Tennessee. That relationship is not known.
It appears to me that parents of William were Moore MATLOCK and Jane POWELL who lived in Halifax County, Virginia before coming to upper East Tennessee. DNA results prove at this time that he is closely related. Because of another DNA from David Matlock's descendant...it appears that he is more closely related to David. Markers in the 37-marker DNA testings...shows that there is a parallel between David's son William's (1762) descendant and my William (1753) descendant. But until further test come in on the DNA it is hard to really say where William comes from. Because of David's Bible record naming a son William I know that my William is not son of David. At the end of David's Bible there is a listing of his William and his family. But do not know if this was listed years later or when exactly that this was added to the Bible. There is a good paper trail from my William to John Matlock of TX who took the DNA test. That lineage is correct. Since my William had a son in 1777 it is highly unlikely that he is the one in David's Bible record.....he was born in 1762. Thru deeds it is proven that David is son of William 1702.
The maiden name of William’s wife has not been proven. It is known by Indiana records that his wife was Sarah or Sally. Some researchers think that Sarah’s maiden name might have been Sheppard. It is also said that his second wife is Sally Walker. This is not true. William Jr. son of William married Sally and they moved to Monroe County, Indiana before William Sr.moved to Indiana. William Jr. left a will and named wife Sarah and children there. He can be found in Indiana by 1820 census at age 26-45. William Sr. would have been in his 60’s by this time and he was still living in Roane County, Tennessee.
"History of Roane County, TN" by Emma Wells. Mrs. Wells said "that among the early settlers who came into the lands and bought were from Hawkins County, TN. She also implied that William Matlock was brother-in-law to Isaac Rice and Joseph Mee. She states that William built a cabin near by, and these 3 men built a log cabin church house and organized a church membership about 1812." Isaac Rice married Margaret ‘Patsey’ Matlock in Roane County, TN but they are later found in McMinn County, TN along with other Matlock and Mee families. There were two William's in Roane County. William that she has written about might be my William; who had David, Jesse, and others. The other William she could have been referring too is the one that died 1844 in McMinn County, TN. He was brother to Charles, John, Henry, Patsey and others. These Matlock men appear to be the children of John Matlock and Sarah McPherson who were in Grainger County, TN very early. Their father, John, had died before 1810; his wife was found on the 1810 Grainger County, census. Some of their children married there.
According to folklore the McMinn County Matlock's claim that 3 brothers came to upper East Tennesse very early and were listed as Charles, John and William. Charles and John died in Grainger County, Tennessee about 1800. My William could be the other brother but no record has been found to prove that he is.
“Roots of Roane County, TN” by Snyder Roberts... "William Matlock who bought land on the Tennessee River before 1800, and had a grist mill on Cave Creek in 1801, was probably a brother to Jason Matlock. William left about 1812-1813 for Monroe County, IN." I believe that the William he was referring to was William Jr who did go to Monroe County about 1812-1813. William Matlock Sr. was still in Roane County, until 1820 or 1821 according to tax lists.

WILL/PROBATE/ESTATE MORGAN COUNTY, INDIANA
William Matlock filed a will in Morgan County, Indiana but no record of the actual will can be found. According to this Court Order Book and the deeds that were made; there WAS a will. The will book is either missing or the page on which his will was recorded is missing. A friend of mine searched for me while in Salt Lack City last year; but could not find it. Notice on the following that William Matlock was not referred to as senoir on these minutes because his son had preceeded him in death.
