Sgt Bob (or John) Hunt: I wonder if you can help me in my quest to find Sgt Hunt, who was at RAF Bentwaters in the late 50's early 60's. I think he came from South Carolina with his wife Caroline and son Butch They lived off base at Snape. Us Brits 'blokes' always called him John but his wife called him Bob. He was a very keen motorcyclist and member of the Rendlesham and District Motorcycle Club and rode in many scrambles (dirt bike races) in the area. I am sure he worked somewhere in the Control Tower on base but no dept or service number. I lost contact with John after he returned to the States with his family, somthing I very much regret. Can Anyone Help Dawn: Greeting from Texas. I'm interested in information on a Mr & Mrs Harry Cottis living (Ipwich?) close to the base. I dont know the name of the street, but have been told they were the only English family living on the street. Everyone else may have been American's renting. They had one son Allen, well known to babysit and help Americans around the base. I have also been told they visted Florida at one time, later moveing to South End England, fostering two little girls. Any infomation on the Cottis Family would help fill in some lost years. Thank you for your time and attention. Dawn Rice4/20/02
Lt William O Roberts: Searching for information about, William, (Picture Here) my Father, based at RAF Bentwaters, 81 TFW, 92nd Tac Ftr Sq. He was the pilot of an F-101A that went down on 1 Apr 1959. Also would like to hear from anyone who knew him. Submitted by Robbyn Roberts Hill. 1/9/02
Dennis Rainwater: RAF Woodbridge/RAF Bentwaters, Nov 1988-Jan 1991, Det4, 28WS. There was a legend attached to the RAF Woodbridge tower about a friendly ghost named "Herman the German" who haunted the tower on dark, lonely nights. There was certainly enough creaking and groaning to lend credibility to that legend! Does anyone else have any factual information regarding how that legend got started? My understanding is that there really was a German pilot named Herman VonSomething-or-other who crashed and died on the WB runway during WWII. That is where my knowledge ends. Any further information would make me happy by quelling my curiosity! 11/27/01
Karen Mayo: Tampa, FL. I am doing research for a friend whose grandfather was stationed at RAF Woodbridge during the 1950s. His name was James Daniel Goggin. He flew with the 79th Sq. I believe his plane was an F-84. His plane went down on a "training mission" on Monday, January 10, 1955. His family would like to know more about this accident. If anyone has any information on this incident or knew James Goggin please email me. My father Mark Mayo was stationed, I believe, at Martlesham Heath during the late 1960s and early 1970s. He worked with communications. He married Patricia Bragg from Ipswich. I can't wait to show them this web site. 9/25/01
Dr David W Clarke: University of Sheffield, UK. Having located you excellent RAF Bentwaters website, I'm wondering if it would be possible to post an appeal for information on your message board/s. I'm involved in research into an incident that occurred in August 1956 when the GCA unit at RAF Bentwaters tracked 'unidentified flying objects' on their radar screens. This incident
triggered a major alert, with further trackings reported later in the evening by both the RATCC and GCA radars at RAF Lakenheath. My research has led me into contact with the RAF side of this story, in that I have been able to trace both the retired Controller who tracked the UFO from the GCI station at Neatishead
in Norfolk, and crews from RAF Venoms who sent to intercept the targets. I have a list of names of personnel at Bentwaters in 1956 who were involved in the incident, and would like to trace these and/or others who may remember the events. The names of the personnel at RAF Bentwaters and other bases involved in the 1956 incident were: SSgt Lawrence S Wright, Control Tower Shift Chief, 1264th AACS Sq, RAF Bentwaters, TSgt Elmer L Whenry, GCA Operator, 1264th Sq, RAF Bentwaters, John L Vaccare, Jr, GCA Operator, 1264th Sq, RAF Bentwaters, 1Lt Charles V Metz, 512th Fighter Interception Sq, RAF Bentwaters, 1Lt Andrew C Rowe, 512th Fighter Interception Sq, RAF Bentwaters, Major Orville E Bixel, USAF Wing Intelligence Officer, 81st Fighter Bomber Wing, Captain Edward L Holt, USAF Air Targets Officer, Forrest D Perkins, Watch Supervisor, Lakenheath RATCC, SSgt Thomas Emerick, Lakenheath RATCC, James M Kastner A/3C, Lakenheath RATCC, Ronald R Erickson A1C, Lakenheath RATCC. I'd appreciate any assistance you could offer and look forward to hearing from you. Many thanks for your assistance. Hopefully someone may remember something! 5/27/01

While chatting (in a shop) a women overheard me say that I left BW/WB in 1965. She said her Dad left BW in Sep 1965 and never knew him, and her Mom won't give her much info to find him, could I help?? ONLY DETAILS I HAVE FOLLOWS: 1. Airman at BW, left there in Sep 1965 (Name-Rank-Job unknown). 2. He was short in size and a colored airman with a nickname of "Peanuts". 3. Women said at one time her mother mentioned the name of "Mitchell", was she just saying this or was this the airmans real first (or last) name? 4. Went on to say that another airman was a close friend of hers during her pregnacy, and possibly a close friend of "peanuts", his name was Donald Minor (last name could be spelled differently). 5. The mother at one time was leading the daughter to believe that Donald was her Dad, was he the real Dad? Looking for both men; "peanuts" who by all accounts like to dance to the "Mashed Potato", and Donald (as he may have more info about "peanuts").
