The history of the McMaster Chapter of Delta Upsilon International Fraternity began in September 1988. Our first meeting was held on campus at the "Downstairs John" in Wentworth House with twelve men in attendance. During the first meeting, elections were held and Grant Roughley was elected President. It was also decided that the President and the Secretary (Scott McCutcheon) would attend an RLS (Regional Leadership Seminar) and apply to become an interest group of an international fraternity. In February 1989, we became an interest group of Delta Upsilon International Fraternity and we called ourselves Delta Gamma Chi. The name was chosen by Grant Roughley and Greg Kostiw. The next step was to become a colony of Delta Upsilon. We became an official Delta Upsilon colony on March 18, 1989. Much of the focus at this time was to grow in membership and to find a permanent chapter house. We officially became the McMaster Chapter on November 17, 1990. We were the first fraternity at McMaster University since the 1950's. We were also the only non-secret fraternity at the university. The McMaster chapter was located in "Province 2" with nine other Delta Upsilon chapters.
"We, the McMaster Chapter of Delta Upsilon International Fraternity, embrace as our greatest goal the spiritual, mental, and physical betterment of our brothers and the community. We wish to restore the ideals of chivalry and gentlemanly conduct to society through the eternal bond of brotherhood. Our actions will promote friendship, development of character, diffusion of liberal culture and the advancement of justice. The brothers will remain open to the public's concerns and our contributions shall be extended to those less fortunate by donating endless time and effort.
We will achieve these goals by engaging in philanthropy events, brotherhood unity and adhering to proper etiquette and our four founding principles. We will continue to offer the privilege of brotherhood to all good men who share these ideals."
The McMaster Chapter of Delta Upsilon was closed in the fall of 1999. Due to a lack of support and recognition from the university, membership in the chapter decreased and the financial burden on each individual member greatly increased in order to maintain the operation of the chapter. As a result, the chapter had difficulties paying its financial obligations to Delta Upsilon International Headquarters. International Headquarters had no choice but to make the McMaster Chapter inactive until its debts are cleared. It is hoped that once the chapter is able to pay its debts, it will once again become an active Delta Upsilon chapter.
