ACCELERATED READER
Accelerated Reader books are available in the library and classroom. We visit the library at least once a week to update our books.  Students may also go each morning, if needed. They are asked to have three books checked out at a time so they should always have a book on hand.  Your child will be tested every 6 weeks to determine their current reading level.  The reading levels and points are listed on the inside cover of the books.  They should be reading within their range and I will send this home to you near the beginning of each 6 weeks.
At the beginning of each grading period I will sit down with your child to set their reading goal.  Goals should be attainable but also challenging.  I will send home a note to let you know about their goal.  If you aren't getting this information please let me know.
Midway through each period I will also send home a note telling you about their progress towards their goals.

Their AR grade is 20% of their total reading grade.
HOW CAN YOU HELP?
1.  Ask your child questions about what they are reading.
2.  Stop them at the end of each page and have them summarize or tell you what that page was about.
3.  Have them draw a picture showing the main character and tell something about them.
4.  Help them learn the meanings of new words.
5.  Ask them to tell you the main idea of the story.
6.  For fiction, ask them to explain the problem in the story and how the characters solved their problem.
7. Keep informed about your child's progress. Check reports and ask them how they are doing on their quizzes.
