Dear editor, I recently read an article entitled "Rivalry" by Chelsea Kearney in Schoharie Central School's newsletter. I thought Kearney did a wonderful job of bringing to light all the aspects of the rivalry between Middleburgh and Schoharie central schools. For instance, I had no idea that at Shoharie's pep rally they dress in drag to represent Mr. and Mrs. Middleburgh. What a wonderful idea. The article was filled with similarly amusing tales that exemplify a long lasting tradition. Kearney's write up finished off by stating that this year Middleburgh students have failed to paint Schoharie's cannon so, "...after 70 years of tradition, should we give up on...an ancient rivalry or should we be ready?" This past Friday, March 8, soon after Kearney's article was released, Schoharie's cannon was painted with the words "Be Ready" and a copy of the article was taped to it. I congratulate who ever it was that thought up this prank for bringing humor into the rivalry. Too often there have been destructive things done to one school or another. I admit that burning your school's initials into a sports field is an excellent way to get your point across, however the grassless patches could have a tendency to hinder players. I believe that a healthy rivalry between schools is a great way to boost team morale and school spirit. It is when a rivalry becomes destructive, that the competition is no longer fun and begins to become a bit of a problem. Middleburgh Central School has had a string of destructive pranks pulled on them in the past few years and that is no fault of Schoharie's. Middleburgh does not have a cannon, so what is there left to paint, but the school itself. I suggest that Middleburgh find a lawn orament that they can cement into the ground so Schoharie students can paint it at their leisure. This way the rivalry won't become something that can't be fixed with a little black paint. So here's to the Middleburgh masterminds: Keep up the good work, your harmless, humorous pranks are appreciated.
Sincerely, Mollie Driscoll Senior at Middleburgh Central |
