Recently there has been a debate on whether or not there should be a cell tower. It has been said that the tower will be built on the cemetery next to Mr. Laraway's property. |
Mr. Laraway disagrees with the idea of the cell tower being built on the cemetery. "The cemetery is sacred ground, a place for the dead, and 10,000 plus people [including] some veterans should be shown more respect than be a money maker for the village." Mr. Laraway also said, "Out of the five people on the board, Mayor Hayes doesn't have enough votes, yet he still pushes for it." Mr. Laraway is willing to let the town place the cell tower on his land if the cemetery is left alone and the money is donated to charity. Having this cell tower will ruin the scenic valley and small children may get sick from it says Mr. Laraway. |
Mr. Hayes on the other hand thinks the cell tower is needed. "This will cut most people's long distance calls about fifty percent," says Hayes. He informed me that it is a sign of new technology, gives kids resources to use it, and it's needed.. Mr. Hayes has not yet heard that it is not needed. "We need cell phones, it's a way of doing business." Mr. Hayes has no problem with giving the money to charity if the tower is placed on Mr. Laraway's land, but Mr. Hayes said "who said the cell tower is being placed in the cemetery?" Mayor Hayes stated that you cannot use sick children as a factor for determining where a cell tower will be placed, and said the federal government said that. "I never want to see anyone get sick," stated Mr. Hayes. |
While the debate is still going on, we should know soon whether or not Middleburgh will be building a cell tower and where it will be placed. |
Alice In Chains singer Layne Staley was found dead in his apartment in Seattle on Friday, April 19th. According to the King County Medical Examiner's Office, Staley died about two weeks ago. An autopsy had to be performed to identify the body. At this point the cause of death has not been established, but Staley has long been troubled by a heroin addiction. "It was natural or an overdose - that's the way it was determined by our investigators," said Duane Fish, Seattle Police spokesman. Either way Staley will be missed. He has had a huge influence on music in the past decade. A testament to this could be seen at a candle light vigil held at the Seattle Center, the same housing for the vigil after Kurt Cobain's death in 1994. While with Alice In Chains, the band released five albums, including the now revered Dirt. The band's dark sound, as well as Staley's low, hard voice has influenced dozens of modern bands as well. Layne Staley is lost, but will not be forgotten. Layne Staley 1967-2002 |
To the editor: I read with interest the story about Bouck Falls in The Middleburgh Student Press. Please inform your readers that all of our property is "Posted" and no trespassing is allowed. This does not mean that we do not allow access to our property. There is a proper proceedure to gain access to property that has "No Trespassing" signs posted on it. Please have your reporters research this and inform your readers of how to do this without breaking the law. If someone does not follow our wishes in gaining access to our property every time, the authorities will be called (and I'm not sure what the current fine is for trespassing). I can be reached at this e-mail address [natebg@midtel.net] for more information. Thanks, Mrs. Patricia Becker |
