My name is Mohamed Diriye Abdullahi.

Bonjour, je m'appelle Mohamed Diriye Abdullahi.

Maalin Wanaagsan. Magacaygu waa Mohamed Diriye Abdullahi.

I have a PH.D. in linguistics from the Université de Montréal, Montréal, Québec, Canada. I speak Somali (my native language), English, French and Arabic. I did my masters in Linguistics also at the Université de Montréal. I earned also a a higher diploma in 'teaching French as a second language' at the Université de Franche-comté at Besançon, France.

My research interests include linguistic issues relating to the languages of North-east Africa, especially Cushitic languages. I am additionally interested in cultural, and historical issues, as well as multicultural issues relating to education and understanding between people of different cultures.

Among my publications and papers are:

Major publications:

1.   Culture and Customs of Somalia. Africa, Culture and Customs (ISSN: 1530-8367) Greenwood Press. Westport, Conn. 2001. pages LC 2001016169. ISBN 0-313-31333-4. GR1333 (Reference Book) This book is essentially a look at the culture and history of Somalis of the Horn of Africa across Somaliland, Somalia, Djibouti, Ethiopia and Kenya.

2. Parlons Somali, L'Harmattan, Paris, 1997. 367 pages. ISBN : 2-7384-4894-4. Language: French. Parlons somali

This is essentially a grammar of the Somali language presented in an easy and comprehensive way for the non-native speaker; nevertheless, linguists would find many useful items about the phonology, the morphology and the syntax of Somali. It is also covers some information along the way about history, geography, and culture. Included is also a short lexicon of Somali-French, and French-Somali. Additionally, it has a chapter on daily conversions useful to those visiting a Somali-speaking area in Somaliland (the northern regions that stepped back from the union with Somalia in 1991), Somalia, Northern Kenya, Eastern Ethiopia and Djibouti. An English translation may be undertaken one day, hopefully.

Occasional paper no. 61.

Africa Institute of South Africa.

November 1995.
