There's something about A Trip to the Moon that never gets old no matter how many times I've
watched it; the image of the rocket in the man in the moon's eye has fascinated me since I was a six year
old. The creator of this icon was George Melies - the first special effects artist. While most movies
from the 1900's are of public events and vaudeville gags,
Melies' Star Film company produced fantasy epics with make up, miniatures, and trick photography. However,
the novelty in his films wore off with his audience when he refused to keep up
with more modern techniques. Today he is most loved of pioneer filmmakers, and definately the first to realize cinema's potential. There are thousands of sites about
Melies, but most are in French and do not offer a variety of
information. Because of that I have made my own site as an appreciation for this somewhat neglected
artist.
