The Man with the
Rubber Head
aka: L'homme a la Tete de Caoutchouc, The India Rubber Head
Time: 2 min
Year: 1902
Synopsis: Melies expands a
miniature rubber head by pumping air with a pair of bellows through a tube
leading to the head. As the head increases, so does its range of facial
movements. After deflating it, Melies calls for his lab assistant, who continues to expand the head
- until it explodes.
Melies made two of his greatest films in 1902. The first being A Trip to the Moon. The second, The Man with the Rubber Head. To create the illusion of an expanding head, Melies "zoomed" in on his own head with a camera and superimposed this onto the film (again with "Black Magic"). He received the idea from Albert A. Hopkins Magic - Stage Illusions and Scientific Diversions.
