Downe

Hello Elizabeth I was excited to come across your website on a google search for William Downe. My 2 x gt grandfather was Harry Austin Downe born in Exeter Devon about 1839 (haven't found birth yet) youngest son of William and Georgiana Downe (nee Beynon). William's father was also William born about 1771 and mother Ann b about 1779 . Georgiana Beynon was born in Stokenham Devon about 1803 (haven't looked into this yet-is on IGI.)
Harry Austin came to New Zealand in about 1865 (can't find ship, so now possibly came here from Australia) He was still in Exeter on 1861 Census. He married Eliza Matilda Brooker (b Brighton Sussex arr NZ 1874) in 1877 and their children were Beynon Austin (Austin) b 1878 and Bertha Annie b 1880. Harry was accidentally drowned in 1884 and Eliza remarried and they all ended up in Sydney.

CHRISTENING:
IGI shows "Bejamin" - ??Benjamin??. Named in Mother's Will as "Benjamin".
All Australian references are "Beynon", possibly chr 19/4/1831.

OCCUPATION:
Town surveyor- Castlemaine, Vic. Architect of town markets building. Markets built 1861/62 when aged 29/30.
Worked at Ballan (near Ballarat).
Designed 'Esplanade' at St.Kilda..
Had office in St.Kilda [ex AAD].
Designed St.Kilda Town Hall Plaque at same.
Civil Engineer on Death entry.
St.Kilda Railway & possibly Brighton Town Hall.
Civil Engineer 1858, Shire Engineer at Echuca, Surveyor 1859
Melb-St.Kilda railway line & St.Kilda city engineer & planning. Lived in Carlisle Street..
Associated with Australian Gaslight Co. (street lighting).

m1- 1/2/1853 ???? Widower. 1 ch died early-. [unable to confirm]. Possibly in England. Wife and child died at birth. Widower at 9/2/1853, with no living children.
m2- Augusta MacMinn at St.Marks Church, Collingwood, when aged 27. 4 children.
m3- Margaret MacMinn, when aged 52. No ch. Sp 2 &3 are sisters.

DEATH: Aged 71, Cemetery records show 73.

Was in Castlemaine 1853 ??aged 21??. Probably still in England 1853.

RELIGION:
Anglican, but buried in Baptist section Possibly frowned upon by C of E, as Augusta may have been as young as 15 at marriage. (she said she was 19) Also had 3 marriages, and had little interest in his children.
