Edward Garth believed born in England about 1768 and died at Hobart, Tasmania, Australia 1823, wed Suzannah (other details unknown) believed born 1763 in England and died at Hobart 1841. They appear to be First Fleet convicts, and included in the special group sent to pioneer Norfolk Island as a food supply for the Sydney settlement.

1. Crimes of the First Fleet Convicts.
Susannah Garth (Grant) (aged 24 in 1787) and Elizabeth Dudgens (aged 23 in 1787) were together tried in the Old Bailey Weds 10 Sept 1873 for stealing, sentenced to 7 years transportation.
Edward Garth (age not recorded) was tried in Old Bailey Weds 8 Dec 1784 for stealing 2 cows, sentenced to death respited to transportation to Africa for 7 years

On Weds 30 January Mr Jameson's choices of 8 convict men and 6 women were selected, and given permission to marry if affection arose. Anne Yates declined her offer and Susan Gough replaced her.
On Thurs 14 Feb (Page 75) The personell accompanying Lieutenant King to colonise Norfolk Island were Mr Jamison, Surgeon's First Mate of the Sirius, Mr James Cunningham Master's Mate of the Sirius, Mr T Turnpenny Altree Assistant to the Surgeon, two seamen, Roger Morley a weaver and William Westbrook a sawyer, two marines from the Sirius, Charles Kerridge and John Batchelor, six female convicts, Elizabeth Lee, Elizabeth Colley, Olivia Gascoin, Ann Inett, Susan Gough; and nine male convicts including Charles McClellan, Richard Widdicombe, Edward Garth, Edward Westlake, John Mortimer, Noah Mortimer and Nathaniel Lucas. They took stores for 6 months, "some sheep, hogs and poultry, seeds and plants, with tools and implements for clearing and cultivating the ground"
On 19 March the Supply returned to Sydney and reported" It was with great difficulty and hazard they landed the provisions and stores, the shore being extremely rocky and the surf beating very high".
On 17 July the Supply was sent to Norfolk Island with 6 months provisions, and returned on 26 Aug to report the deaths of Mr Cunningham and three others lost in a boat that was swamped by the surf.
3. Blackburn's Isle, by Derek Neville, records the Supply sailed on 17 Feb 1788 with 21 male convicts, 6 female convicts and 3 children including a boy (3) and a girl (4). I can find no trace of these children in my reference books.

Hi ELizabeth

I was looking through your website and noticed that you didn't have much information on John Richard Garth. John Richard Garth was born 28 Nov 1826 in Hobart Tas and died 12 Mar 1878. He married my GGG Grandmother Ann Harrison 26 May 1863 in Saint John Baptist Church Hobart Tasmania and I believe they had no children as this was Ann's second marriage the first to my GGG Grandfather James Muir who died at sea I believe (Captain of a whaling ship).
The other interesting thing to note is that Selina Jemima Garth married John Downey Muir who was believed to be Ann's son as she appeared on the birth certificate of one of their children as the grandmother. I've never been able to prove this but from the research my mother has done it seems so as John appears as a witness to James Matthew Muir's wedding. James was Ann's other son to James SNR.

Hello,

I am writing in regard to Esther Jane Garth b. 1829; d. Edward Garth & Ann Bellett.

I believe that Esther may be my g.g.granmother but very little is known. You have Esther Jane as being married Henry William Young in 1854.

I suspect that this may been her second marriage and that she originally married Edward Barrett in 1845. There is a record for the marriage of Edward Barrett and Esther Garth 1845. They had three children and Edward died in 1854. The eldest son is my g.grandfather, also Edward.

The Archives of Tasmania have two records as follows:

Hi Elizabeth,

I've just been into the WA BDM site looking for Lavinia Loftus Avis. She is supposed to have married Ernest Edmond GARTH in abt 1888 and they had Olive Evelyn Alice GARTH in 1896 in WA, Claude Sylvester GARTH in 1903 died Freemantle 1929, and Amelia Loftus GARTH in 1904.

Is Ernest the same man as Clifford? There can't be two Lavinia Loftus Avis, could there?

Her father was George Avis, born abt 1840 in Dover, England (died 1900 in Freemantle WA in 1900) (his parents Thomas Avis and Eleanor Loftus), and Lavinia's mother was Susan Mary Groves, born abt 1840 to James Groves and Ann (Susan died abt 1882 in Victoria, Australia).
Lavinia was born abt 1867 in Surrey, England.
Lavinia's sister, Annie Amelia Avis married Edward Sylvans Henry GARTH in 1886 in Victoria. Maybe Ernest (Clifford ?) and Edward were brothers????
Her other sister Alice Maude Avis died in 1903 at Freemantle WA.
Can you help me clarify the boys names please. Much obliged.

Also both girls were sweet teenagers - both had babies before marriage
