Hello Linda...

Yes most of this family disappeared from Victoria in the latter part of the 1800's. John Henry Hagg was born in Colchester Essex around 1824 I believe and came over to Oz when he was around 27 (perhaps!) He married Elizabeth Millar in 1853 They had at least 5 children I know of although I don't have a Henry Hagg. John Hagg was an Outfitter/Tailor. Elizabath Millar was the daughter of Paul Millar and Annie Ross. She was born c1835 in Edinburgh. It certainly sounds like we have the same Hagg family though... so it would be great to hear from you. I am not a Hagg descendant but a Millar one. Elizabeth in the daughter of my Millar family who migrated from Scotland in 1852. I did notice an Alfred Hagg in the 1881 census in England "Glass Artist" born Victoria Australia 1858 (?) so I suspected that they might have returned to England...

Hi Lyn,
I am sure it is the same family. I have a copy of the 1861 census showing John H Hagg 46yrs living at 9 Old Market Place ("George")Sudbury Suffolk. He was a master tailor employing 6 hands. Elizabeth 35yrs, Alfred 12yrs, Henry 8yrs, James 4yrs and Eva 1yr. Henry, James & Eva all born in Sudbury.I also have a 1861 census entry which shows a Alfred Hagg 37yrs clothier employing 50 women, 24 men and 1 boy in Colchester (difficult to read address 1 Balotph? St)
living with sister Georgiana 42yrs and nephew John A Hagg 4yrs, born in Australia. Looks like this family moved back and forth quite a bit.Do you know if Helen, Jane or George stayed in Victoria and if so what part?
I might even have to start barracking for a Melbourne footy team now as both my grandparents families have links to Melbourne! Regards

Linda

I do have info on George Francis Hagg, Helen Ann, and the Millar family etc... George Francis must have taken after his parents... he had a mile of different addresses just here in Melb....
