From on Monday, 1 September, 2008

Dear Elizabeth,
I was interested to see your bit on Charles Huntingford and Susannah Sleeman. I am doing (for the past 40 years!) a One Name Study of the Huntingford family. I have always understood that Charles and Susannah met on the ship coming to Australia. The family story was that her brother was not there to meet her and she married Charles Huntingford as single ladies were in a precarious position on their own.

Jesse Thomas was a different family altogether. His parents were Jesse and Caroline Huntingford of Twickenham, London. Charles came from Bramshott as you say. I have a photograph of Charles if you would like a copy. It came from one of his descendants, Ivan Gray.
Keep up the good work, Lyn (McCulloch nee Huntingford)
PS I am interested to know more about the places Charles lived in and the life they led. It is fascinating stuff. I can send you one of my newsletters if you want. I do one a year about my Huntingford research.

Jesse Huntingford aged 22 came Nov 1873 on the Northumberland. It looks like Jesse was the first Huntingford to pay his own fare, in 1873.
Earlier arrivals are in the lists as Assisted British Immigrants

Jesse Thomas Huntingford wed 1875 #4734 to Janet Newlands 1855 #3553, and lived at Richmond

Dear Elizabeth,
I think the brother who preceded Susanna was the Richard Sleeman that you have arriving in 1852 with Mary (presumably his wife?)
I see the brother and sister in 1851 in Plymouth. Susannah is Head of the household , 29 a Bread Baker. Richard her brother is 30 and a Journeyman Baker, both born Devonport. There is also a little girl aged 3 with them - Maria G. Hawkings, niece, bn Devonport. She must have just been visiting as in 1861 she is back at home with the Hawkings family in Devonport. They are also Bakers. Susannah sounds a very capable lady and well able to look after herself!! Many thanks for your reply, Yours, Lyn
