Walkden

Richard Walkden 1793 - 1880 #7251 aged 87 years son of unknown and Thomas Walkden, came about 1850 and joined in 1852 by his chn and Mary Sephen Dougan
Have not got wife Mary's death. She and the 9 surviving children came to Australia on the Great Britain in 1852

Hello Elizabeth -
I can tell you a little bit about Mary Ann Sarah Walkden - she was marked in my family notes (passed on through the ages) as Anna Walkden who married Ravenscroft Stephen - it is not unusual for the family to be known under a different name to their registered name - I was glad to find your site and find her full name etc as I haven't yet managed to look at the Victoria BDMs
Anna's father was Richard Walkden and her step mother was Mary Sephen Dougan - it is the Dougans I am researching.
According to family notes the entire family came to Melbourne, Australia on the first voyage of the SS Great Britain in 1852.
I can find where Mary and the children came to Australia on that boat but not the Father Richard - and also two children are missing.
The passenger list (altered to birth date order) is as follows
Mrs Walkden (this is Mary )
1. Miss Walkden (who I presume is our Mary Ann Sarah) - known to the family as Anna - no idea of birth and was the eldest of the children - a step daughter
2. John Walkden (married Emma Stanley- presumeably in Victoria) - his full name is John Venn Walkden born about 1835 and according to family was an explorer who spent time exploring Central Australia
3. Cecilia Walkden (should be Cecil - married and settled in NSW) - full name Richard Cecil Walkden Born about 1838 - known as Cecil
4. Frederick Walkden (married Elizabeth Pearse in 1868 in Vic - maybe you have details of their family - I don't) - His full name is Frederick Dougan Walkden born 1839
5. Frank Walkden (married Mary Ann Beard in 1876 in Vic - maybe you have details of their family - I don't) - His full name is Francis Julius Matthew Walkden born 1840 - known as Frank and according to family records a prosperous settler in Gippsland
6. George Walkden (who married and settled in NSW) - full name George King Walkden born 1843
7. Clarence Walkden (married and settled in NSW) - full name Clarence Parland Walkden born about 1844
8. There was also another child Basil Walkden who was born in 1845 - and died in NSW - so I presume he was on that boat somewhere.
9. Emily Walkden ( who married Reverand Charles Strickland MACKIE and I believe they settled in England) - Full name Emily Mary Walkden - born 1847
So I have no clue when Richard the father came over - I do have an interesting family story as to why they came over.
There was a child, Agnes Walkden but as I only have her birth details I am assuming she may have died before the voyage.
Perhaps I missed Basil and Richards names the day I was perusing the list - so I will endeavour to re- check this.

I first searched using Wadham and dates to 1910
