James Baccus

James Baccus appears to have assumed this name when he arrived in Tasmania, as his name is not in the shipping record of the 'Lord Wm Bentinck' or in court records for Colchester, Essex.
The records in Hobart state that
James Baccus of Colchester, Essex was transported on 'Lord Wm Bentinck', arrived 20 Aug 1832. His crime was desertion from the army and he was to be detained at Port Arthur for seven years from the date of his arrival.

At the court martial 11 Sept 1837 for absconding, he was sentenced to the hulk where his report was good 21 Dec 1838 to July 1843.

In Aug 1843 he was sent to Port Arthur to be reconsidered.
On 26 May 1845 he was absent from the Gang without leave, and sentenced to 3 months hard labour in chains.
