Pilkington

From on Monday, 13 April, 2009

Greetings,
I saw your excellent web site on the internet and happened to notice your information relating to Joshua Dyson Farrar, who wed Annie Pilkington, daughter of Mary More and William Pilkington. I do not know if there is a link, but given the information, names and dates, there is a slight possibility that a relationship exists between your William Pilkington and the William Pilkington I am trying to trace. Hope you do not mind the inquiry.
Would you happen to know any additional details pertaining to William, Mary and Annie Pilkington? My GG Grandfather was a William Pilkington. The family home being in the county of West Meath and Kilbride , Ireland. Although, I have found some information on his son (my Great Grandfather – Emmanuel Pilkington) I can find virtually no references pertaining to either Emmanuel’s or William’s birth records in the Irish sources.
I do know some family members immigrated to Australia and am hoping that your William Pilkington and mine are the same.
It would account for the fact that I cannot trace down any information through Irish sources. Two key pieces of information I do have are that William Pilkington’s father was Capt. Abraham Pilkington of Kilbride, Ireland. I also have a memorial card that notes Capt. Abraham Pilkington’s passing and that of his son, William Pilkington, who passed away in 1892. In the case of William Pilkington, it lists his original family home as Kilbride, but does not indicate where he died.
Hope you can help and looking forward to hearing from you.
Regards, Jim Blower, Edmonton, Canada

Answer - In searching for shipping records, I found none for Victoria, but did find some interesting items in South Australia's TheShipList - The ship Dirigo . . . . . sailed from Birkenhead in early July 1854, but was forced to go into Queenstown (Cork) due to cholera aboard. The ship was towed back to Liverpool by the steam vessel Minerva, arriving there on July 10th 1854. Arrangements were made to fashion a temporary hospital but met with resistance from local people. Of the 518 passengers and 51 crew-members, there were 44 deaths recorded as of July 11th. The ship Dirigo, 1,282 tons, Captain Joseph Trevellick, from Liverpool 8th August 1854, arrived at Port Adelaide, South Australia 22nd November 1854 after a passage of 107 days. She landed 482 immigrants. Fourteen deaths and twelve births took place at sea. This ship arrived in a very excellent order. The cleanliness, general management and discipline of the people reflected the highest credit on Mr. W.L. Echlin, the surgeon-superintendent.
Assisted Immigrants included Maurice Moore 43 Agr. Labourer of Limerick, Margaret Moore 43 died at sea, November 09
with Michael Moore 21, Mary Moore 18 and Garrett Moore 15.
Among the Single Men was William Pilkington 28, Agr. Labourer from Lancashire

William Pilkington appears to have wed in South Australia to Mary Moore, then came overland to live at Warrnambool
