Payne

Dear Elizabeth,
I have the marriage certificate of Thomas Payne to Mary Gallacher. Both signed their names without any middle name. Thomas was the son of George Payne and Jane Wood, he was 22 and she was 20.
The marriage of George PAIN to Jane WOOD took place at the Parish Church, Eastry, Kent on 31st October 1841. He was of full age and she was a minor. His father was Edward, Labourer. Jane's father was John Wood, shoemaker. Definately only one marriage.
George died at Hamilton from arsenical poisoning. I have his death certificate, inquest results etc. The one thing wrong on his death certificate is his mothers maiden name. It says Paine when in fact she was Sophia White.- married at Woodmancote, Sussex. Children listed on George Pain/Payne's death cert. Charles, dead. John, George, Emma, Thomas, Julia, Susan, William and Edward.
Charles died young (inquest) John married Susan Addinsall, George married twice Mary Finnegan and Ida Fiedler, Emma married late in life George Holmes later she committed suicide (inquest) Julia married Sam Savin, Susan married Christopher Hallett, William married Mary Ann Bond and Edward married her sister Elizabeth. I have most of the family tree up to the 1980's.
I have traced both George and Jane back as far as possible. The earliest Pain/Payne family were from East Grinstead, Sussex. They went to Steyning in Sussex where George was born, then to Northbourne in Kent. Edward and Sophia both died in the Union Workhouse, Eastry, Kent. Not a nice place to end their days, but it was hard times then.
Thomas born at Sea was named after the vessel - Milne, a name that suffered from spelling variations.

George Payne 36, came Jan 1853 on the Ann Milne with Jane Wood and 5 children, and the family lived at Hamilton. They were on "Linlithgow Plains Station" (now called "Devon Park") near Dunkeld, when Julia and Susan were registered, and moved to Muddy Creek near Hamilton before the birth of the next child, William on 23 Aug 1859
George Payne died in 1869 at Muddy Creek near Hamilton, Victoria. Jane died at Macarthur, Victoria in 1905.

From on Sun, 11 May 2008 Mead Spendelow Baulch, daughter of Silas and Emily nee Brown is the one who married Thomas Manly Payne. I am also related to the Baulch's, on Mums side. Mead was the daughter of ?Spendelow. They were a big family of girls, no boys, so the name Spendelow died out in Australia (from that line) I have it all in my piles of stuff somewhere.Silas and Emily died in Hamilton, Vic. They lost one son Leith Silas David in the 1st world war. Jim also went to the war but he came back. Silas and Emily Baulch had Henry Thomas, Mead, Ivy Mildred, James Gordon, Leith Silas David, Vera Annie Emily, Doris Pearl and Verner Lewis. Silas was born 1859 at Kirkstall, Vic the son of Enoch and Honor (nee Mead) Baulch. Hence Mead Spendelow Baulch in the next generation who married. Tom Payne. She copped her grandmother's maiden names.
