His age was shown as 31 and hers as 24, their occupations were labourer and servant respectively. They had met on board the Shooting Star, whilst both were migrating to Australia, arriving in Melbourne on 26 February 1857, he was then aged 25 yrs. Thomas and Bridget settled on land, one mile from Newbridge, Victoria towards Laanecoorie, which they sold by auction on 20 February 1872. On 15 June 1871, whilst still residing at Newbridge, Thomas gained selection of leasehold land of 128 acres, being Allotment 10, Section C, in the Agricultural Area of Moliagul in the parish of Tarnagulla, county of Gladstone. Later, 9 March 1881, he acquired a further 60 acres, being Allotment 12A Section C, the lease of Stefano Pola. Stefano had arranged a mortgage with Thomas to pay out an original mortgage held over the land by Joseph Tivey. Consequently Thomas was obliged to foreclose on the arrangement because of Stefano Pola's inability to pay the mortgage out.

Shipping records appear to change the romantic story of Bridget and Thomas's adventures on the Shooting Star. Thomas appears to have met Bridget when she arrived nearly two years after him, and they began their romance with memories with the 'Shooting Star' in common. Both came as unassisted migrants.
