Karen met John at a barbecue, one June day at
her brother Barry's house. It seemed to be love at
first sight for them. Karen was a first grade teacher
and John was a junior attorney at the same firm where
Barry worked. They began dating and found they were
deeply in love. In March, over Karen's spring break,
they were married in the small church they attended.
They drove to Galveston, on the Texas coast, for a
honeymoon. When they returned home they began their
married life and was very happy for their first year.
Then in June after their first anniversary they discussed
being ready to have a child. Karen went to her O.B.G.Y.N.
Dr. Ross. He told her there was nothing that would prevent
them from conceiving. Karen and John were so excited with
that news.
However only a few weeks later Karen was called to the
hospital because John had been in a car accident. When
she arrived Dr. Williams told her everything was being
done for John but due to a head injury he was in a coma.
The doctor told Karen, John's recovery would depend on
if he was able to regain consciousness. She was then
allowed to be at his bedside.
Karen took his limp hand in hers and looked into his closed eyes.
eyes. She then heard his voice saying, "I love you. Take care of
yourself and our baby girl." She looked and his eyes were still
closed and his hand still lying limp on the bed. She thought she
had imagined hearing what he had said. Everyday for a week,
when she came into his room and held his limp hand she heard
him saying those same words. Now she thought she was daydreaming.
Then came the morning when she took his hand, he squeezed
her's back and slowly opened his eyes. He then said to her
in a whisper, " I love...you... Take care...of yourself.....and
our baby... girl."
Karen was so excited. She was pushing the nurse call button and
shouting, "He's awake....he's awake!" Two nurses came running
into the room, the first one told the second to call Dr. Williams.
It wasn't long before the doctor arrived. He examined John, then
told Karen he was going to be okay, but they had given him
something to make him sleep, so she should go home to rest.
The doctor called his wife to come drive Karen home. She told
Dr. Williams there was something she needed to do first. He
walked her across the street to Dr. Ross's office. He told the
receptionist to get Karen's doctor. When Dr. Ross saw Karen
he, like everyone in their small town, knew what had been
happening for her and John. She told her doctor she thought
she might be pregnant, so he rushed her right back to the exam
room where he confirmed she was expecting a child.
Dr. Williams's wife was there to drive Karen home. She made
Karen something to eat and made sure Karen went to bed. Karen
was so tired she slept sound for several hours and then got up to go
back to the hospital.
When she got to John's room and took his hand, he opened his
eyes. She told him she was going to have a baby. He answered, "I
know, I told you we are going to have a baby girl!" She then found
out John knew all about their communication when he was in the
comma. Karen then knew she was not imagining what he said to
her. He had been talking to her mind.
After he was better John went home. Seven months later he was
holding Karen's hand as she gave birth to their daughter. They
named the baby Faith, because they both knew it had been faith
in God and their love for each other, that had brought them
through their ordeal.
